Power Strokes 1994-1997 Upgrades and AftermarketUpgrading or adding OEM or aftermarket equipment to your 1994-1997 Ford F-Series with Power Stroke engine.
Please humor this question from a new member. I'm sure it has been asked over and over.
We recently purchased the truck in sig. and absolutely love it!!! The difference between it and our old 1992 460 is like night and day.
When I first looked over the truck and noted the turbo downpipe I mused that it left something to be desired.
Before tearing into it though, does anyone have any data as to mileage and/or power improvements/differences solely from a downpipe and/or exhaust upgrade? Anything we would do should retain the catalytic converter because we live in Southern California, the land of four seasons (fire, flood, mudslide, earthquake) and a bonus (civil unrest) every fifth year.
Thank you for your hospitality and time.

Welcome to the site and welcome to the world of 7.3s....
I saw no change in MPG, but I did see a decrease in the exhaust temps. When you look at your stock down pipe, when it exits the turbo, it is very flat and I would say it does restrict the flow. If /when you install a aftermarket downpipe, you will need to enlarge the firewall area for the larger pipe. I used a porta-power to make the room and then wrapped the pipe with exhaust wrap.
Hope this helps?

SPEED COST MONEY, HOW FAST YOU WANT TO GO?
I cannot offer any real hard data other than your truck will breath better, meaning lower exhaust temps (good thing).
It may feel like you lose bottom end power, but you will really be gaining top end power with the same bottom end.
They do make downpipes to bolt up to your cat, I cannot remember who makes them at the moment, but they do.
I would also like you to consider a TYMAR or equivalent air intake. The cost is fairly reasonable (130ish or less), and your stock airbox leaves alot to be desired, they are guilty of their fair share of dusted motors.

As far as a downpipe it is the first thing along with a set of guages that you need to help your truck out. A boost guage if you watch it will help on the fuel mileage by keeping it low, since you make more boost as you burn more fuel. A great site to do some reading on mods and general fix up of your truck is Steve Baz's site and should be riquired reading if you have a powerstroke.
There are downpipes that will direct bolt to the Cat (I have one, a DPPI). It's not hard to transition the other downpipes that don't have a flange to the Cat. I would also get get a Tymar intake as others have suggested (I made my own version, but would just buy the real thing in hindsight). Cheers!
If you want, email me at all2dale(at)msn(dot)com and ask for the directions to install a 3" down pipe. I'll email them to you. Lots of pictures and you can get a good handle on what it will take to get one into your truck.
