Dual Mass Flywheel?

Hey guys, I'm would like to know what the difference is between a Dual Mass Flywheel and a solid one. Which is better? I'm going to do a standard swap in my 99psd from automatic, so I currently have nothing for a clutch kit. I plan to buy the mid level kit from South Bend for a ZF5 psd.

Thanks

The dual mass flywheel in basic terms is composed of two plates with dampener springs between the two plates. The springs absorb vibration/noise, however, over time they wear out and the two plates develop excessive movement between each other, which in extreme cases has been seen to even crack the tranny case.

The single mass is exactly that, a SINGLE flywheel. It will have some vibration/noise off the, but over time you learn how to drive to truck in such a way to minimize it. Its really not that bad and a much stronger setup that a the dual mass unit.

If I remember right when you buy a South Bend clutch it will come with a single mass flywheel. MUCH better than the dual, much easier pedal to mash. Only disadvantage is that they are quite a bit noisier than the dual mass. You will hear a lot of grinding at low RPMS. It's normal and won't hurt anything, and you get used to it. Another thing, I bought the Con OFE for my truck, I think it was $900. The dual mass flywheel alone will cost you $1,000+ from Ford.

I installed a solid flywheel in mine when the dual mass started coming apart on me, I did not notice hardly any change in noise levels between the two. Basically the dual mass is a piece of junk and just one more thing to go wrong in your truck. Put in a solid flywheel and be done with it...

I had a Luk kit put in my 1994 and I agree with "You will hear a lot of grinding at low RPMS." I push in the pedal sooner while decelerating. Pedal effort is much higher but somehow the clutch feels more solid on takeup. Shop around - I found enormous variation in price here in Canada

I installed the Luk clutch and solid f/w. I went to the "allaboutclutches" store on ebay, printed off the add and took it to Auto Zone. They did a price match and even though they included the shipping costs from the online store, I still saved about $150-200 on both parts from them. Food for thought.

I used a LUK clutch and solid flywheel in my IDI motorhome and a Southbend Con OFE in my 99' superduty. The LUK cluthch is quiet, smooth and easy in the ZF-5. The Southbend is noisier, a little grabby and a very light pedal in the ZF-6. I think the grabbiness is due to the organic/ferrous material, but that clutch will hold a lot more hp/torque than the organic anlone sufaces.
The 99' and up superduties never came with a dualmass flywheel, so I don't think one is even available. Either brand you go with, I think you will be happy.

Thanks for the info guys. I was leading more towards the south bend with a solid flywheel because I want to add some power down the road, and do a little sled pulling. No major competitions just at the local county fairs, maybe 3 times a year.

solid 1 piece is the way to go. dual mass falls apart under heavy loads. i switched to the 1 piece and other than a bit of chatter at take off, its a great unit!

I would go for the solid one. I heard many stuffs about the dual mass that it is a failure. It is usually replaced when the clutch needs changing.

I had a 95 F250 with the dual mass and when it started to go bad it would make the engine run like it was going to stall when ever I would start it or shove in the clutch at a stop sign. I didn't realise what was going on until my starter hung up. I went with the luk. No more problems. Mine was bad from the start. Ford kept replacing injectors under warranty even though they didn't have any codes.
