DYI LUK or let someone else do it??

Need a SMFW bad, was going to get one and try to do it myself but I have never changed a clutch in a modern vehicle with hydro and all but didnt think I could afford to pay someone else to do it.
talked to a local toady they call the Diesel Doc and comes highly recomended that said he would sell me a LUK SMFW with standard LUK clutch and put it in for under $1000 bucks! seems like a deal since I was going to spend 600 after shipping for the clutch itself.
how much have yall had to pay for this job? is it worth 400 extra bucks??

Re: DYI LUK or let someone else do it??

I'm doing mine tomorrow w/ the voluteered help of a few guys here from the boards. I'll post after I'm done to say whether or not I'd pay 400 extra to have it done instead of doing it myself. If the hydro is your only hold-up, it's not that bad. Once you've replaced a master cylinder once it's pretty easy.

It gets 21-23 mpg consistently (on the highway) and 17 mpg in town. My remaining planned mod list includes Amsoil & electric radiator fans.

Re: DYI LUK or let someone else do it??

I did it in a lazy day and I did not mess with the slave cylinder in the slightest, just took it off and tucked it up somewhere, did not break the piping at all. The crossmember needs to be unbolted and beaten back out of the way and I think the exhaust downpipe needed to be unbolted from both ends...all relatively easy work and there is enough room to get at most of it. Rent a transmission jack though

Re: DYI LUK or let someone else do it??

I agree with Birkin, it is not to bad at all if you have access to a tranny jack and a shop with a concrete floor. We done one in a friends truck in about 5 hours with 2 of us working on it and we still took time to drink a couple of beers. We only had to take the downpipe loose at the turbo though. Good luck and try it yourself.

If ya have the time and the tools, and the patience, then save 400 and do it your self, other wise pay the 400 and let someone else deal with it. 400 is reasonable, I charge 500 plus parts, but I also change the rear main seal at the same time.

Re: DYI LUK or let someone else do it??

Hey Tarheel,

The clutch/SMFW replacement went VERY smooth on Saturday. I had some great help from here on the boards. (Thanks again guys if ya'll happen to read this. Ya'll are tool cool for doing what you did. )

Now that everything is finished I'd do it again myself or help someonme else out if they needed it. As stated above, rent a tranny jack. They make things so much easier. My DP only had to be unbolted at the top and the cross member is pretty easy to take off once all the bolts are out. The slave Cylinder just clips onto the side of the trans and the line to it doesn't have to be broke open. Just unclip the slave and tuck it up on teh frame rail.

One thing I did learn is that it would be MUCH easier to get at some of the bell housing bolts on the passenger side if you can cut off the downpipe. I wish sopmeone would have told me that.

All in all, it's not a bad job. I forget what exact tiem we started, bnut I think it took us about 5 hours or so.

Good luck w/ wathever you decide to do.
Chris Michalik

No problem Chris, we had a great time as well. Good food to boot. The install went pretty smooth as I can tell. On the way back we even stopped by David Lott's place as he was finishing up an install of some injectors. Pretty cool shop. Said he was maybe gonna run the 1/8 mile track this Friday up there. That would be cool to see.

Re: DYI LUK or let someone else do it??

It has been said a few time, but I will repeat. USE A TRANY JACK.

I used a floor jack with a piece of plywood. It tried to fall off and about crushed me.

If you don't use the jack do the following.

Get some small ratchet straps and attach them so they will hold the tranny from falling. This will allow you to not be crushed. It will also allow you to get the trany up in the air and positioned in place, but again the JACK IS EASIER AND SAFER.

Thanks for the compliment on the food. Yeah, I've always heard David Lott has a pretty cool shop.

Hey, I went by Sears on Sunday and they fixed my 3/8 drive ratchet, and tell Chris that while I was there I picked up a set of Metric Box end wrenches. So whenever he's ready for his flywheel change ya'll know where to find me.

Re: DYI LUK or let someone else do it??

thanks everyone, I believe I will try it myself and use the 400 for a new exhaust and replace while I am in there! My dad just retired and he needs a new project anyway (read:free help!)
