E4OD Buildup for towing

Blew out my tranny the other day while towing my boat. I'm gonna have a shop rebuild it, anybody know what I should have the shop do to beef it up? Any links to good parts? Or links to performance built transmissions?

'97 PSD Crew
40" tires with 4:56 gears
Engine is stock

I tow a 28' flybridge (10k boat).

Re: E4OD Buildup for towing

You need to either repost this in the 94-97 PSD section or wait for a moderator to do so. There are definite ways of making the E4OD a good reliable tranny. Do a search in the 94-97 section too. That will help.

Not sure where you're located Markevelli, but allow me to suggest Brian's Truck Shop over in Arkansas. He's got a healty reputation for building a tranmission custom made to your application with a guarantee he'll stand behind. I think you can get him to build you a trans for around $3500. Might could atleast talk to him and get him to send you some parts.

Re: E4OD Buildup for towing

Brians Truck Shop seems like the place I need, too bad he's not local. I'm in CA and he doesnt seem like he does business other than locally.

I found this link to buying a beefed up tranny as well as the parts needed to build one.

http://www.transmissioncenter.net/E4OD.htm

They use Red Eagle parts among others, anybody heard of these guys? Got any opinions on using them?

Re: E4OD Buildup for towing

I'm a fellow Californicator who has also heard good things about John Wood's transmissions. I recall a post from Swamp Donkey about some of his customers having their trans done there and they are holding up well. They are on my list of places to be towed when mine goes out! Re: E4OD Buildup for towing

I know this is an old thread, but I can't say enough about the John Woods Tranny in my 97 PSD. Replaced the stock tranny at 235,000 and now have 256,000. Pull 14,000 pounds out of San Diego to Glamis and have had no problems. Tuesday I finally go in for new gears. The 3:55s just arn't cutting it.
