Exhaust Breaks

OK, talk to me about exhaust breaks, what are you guys running besides the EBPV, I already gutted mine. I found this on Ebay auction I dont have cruse on my 97 F350 would finding a trany comand box be worth my while? I am also puttting on a new stainless system at the same time, wheres the best place to put one of these? I kinda want it under the hood to keep it out of the elements but I am not sure that it will fit.

Re: Exhaust Breaks

Although I don't have one yet, I've been studying exhaust brakes for some time. The SP Diesel set up you linked to is a system to use the EBPV as an exhaust brake. A cheap alternative to a real one. Worth the money, probably, but I wanted the restriction of the EBPV out of there. Besides the EBPV as an exhaust brake has a few potential problems. I didn't want the possibility of the oil leak from the EBPV actuator. It also doesn't have the braking power or RPM range of the real units. That said, there are several on here running it that way with sucess. It is worth what it costs to set up if you arent worried about the above.

For me, longevity, trouble free, and braking power across a wide RPM range are important. There are several makers or brakes to fit this truck. BD, Jacobs, Pac Brake, Banks, and US Gear. One consideration is if you get a turbo mounted one, you can't upgrade turbos later.
For me a divorced mount is important. Also you can then run a 4" so there is no possibility of an exhaust restriction. The next consideration is how the backpressure is regulated. Most of the above use a calibrated orfice in the butterfly plate to be sure the exhaust backpressure doesn't get too high. The only exception I've seen is the US Gear De-Cellerator. It uses a set up similar to a wastegate to control the backpressure. At lower rpms, the butterfly is shut tight. As the rpm and backpressure rise, the "wastegate" pressure control valve controls the pressure. This way you get braking power across a wide RPM range, not just peak Rpm. I want to go this way since I have a stick and in the mountains, my goal is to not touch the brakes.
I have experience setting up big rigs and installing and maintaining engine brakes as well as exhaust brakes. Any exhaust brake is good, it's better if it has a good braking power across a range of RPM.
I have several trucks in my fleet with Allisons and Jake brakes, Some Volvo 7litre engines with exhaust brakes that get used 400+ times a day, and some 13 speed Cummins powered rigs with Jakes. We used to have 3 8V92 Detriots with Jakes. The new thing is the 12 litre Volvo with the compression brake and the exhaust brake. You can come down to about 12 mph with out hitting the brakes!

Re: Exhaust Breaks

I like the US Gear Brakes as well, my dad has one on his '01. I like it better, because it uses a wastegate rather than an orifice, which allows you to set it where it needs to be.

Re: Exhaust Breaks

After getting my brakes smoking pulling a 4 horse gooseneck trailer here in the mountains of Colorado, I start looking into exhaust brakes. This was long before I found this site so was unable to get all of the good advice I have since enjoyed.

I decided to go with the US Gear because of the complete restriction and the use of the waste gate instead of the orifice to control pressure. My only issue with it is that now I have it for a 3 1/2 inch exhuast and can't go any bigger except for behind it. I am planning on moving it closer to the front by putting it in the cat delete pipe so I can get the 3 1/2 inch to be as short of a run as I can and go bigger after that.

One other issue. I paid about $800 for it and installed it myself. After about a year, it cost me about the same amount to get it repaired. The dealer I bought it from was out of business and I had lost all of my paper work so if there was a warranty, I was out of luck. The mechanic had to work with US Gear and ended up replacing everthing but the body of the brake. Motor, wiring, computer and throttle switch were all replaced.

It sure makes it easy to warm the truck up when I close the brake and turn my chip to high idle though.

Re: Exhaust Breaks

I think I am going to go with one of these, I just ordered my stainless MRBP turbo back. Placement is my next issue, I dont realy want to put it down underneath, beacuse of the salt we have on the roads around here. Anybody use the first clamp out of the turbo to hold one side of the break? Is there enough room to slide the down pipe over? Ebay Brake
