My driveshaft had been squeeking and thunking for that last six months so I decided to do a u-joint replacement on it. The question I have is the double u-joint assembly has a heavy rubber sleave and mine fell off in pieces when I took it apart. My two auto parts guys couldn't get it. Do I need it?

yes you do! without it you will destroy the entire drive shaft in short order. Unless you crawl under your truck and grease that pivot joint once a week you will want those seals

I already have that carrier bearing(That's were the squeaking was coming from). I am refering to the rubber dust seal that keeps that bearing from the outside elements.

If your talking about the front shaft, and are describing the small rubber ring around the ball socket inside the double cardan joint assy., then no, you can survive w/o it, but if you do find one, let me know, mine has been gone for two years, and no problems.
If you call this place, they specialize in drive line parts and will have anything you need. Theyll probably ship it to ya. This is where I got my little rubber seal that is inside that double joint and also where I had to take my drive shaft to have that damned double joint put back together correctly.

Interesting, I just called these folks and they stated they can't look up drive shaft parts from catalog, they need the old part to match up. I guess they aren't interested in national sales.

The rubber dust seal for the Spicer style double cardan front shaft assembly is Spicer part number 2-86-418 and should be available from a driveline shop. Some of these trucks ran an American Axle front driveline but it would have had a metal dust ring tack welded to the stud yoke with no rubber seal, just be careful when looking to see which style you have.
In the defense of the other shop there is no application on driveline components, they must all looked up by dimension.
