Mooo,
I sprayed the hubs with the "hammered" finish black paint and replaced the regular nuts with long chrome ones. It worked out ok. I used Mr Lugnut brand nuts. The large od of the taperd portion of the nut wasn't as big as the oem nuts. It has worked but I don't think I would buy that brand of lugnut again.

I also despise the center caps, but they stay on with a liitle dab of blue silicone in each slot that the tabs lock into. Don't overdo it, though, or you will have to beat them off with a hammer.
I feel your pain, caps that install from the back of wheels and longer lugs are the path, but not sure if you can get them for stock rims as mine are aftermarket.

OEM wheels are hub-centric, so no room for center caps from the backside. I know of one guy who machined out the center just enough to allow for them.
Best fix for stock caps is to remove wire bail, place each one of the four risers in a vise and very carefully bend them outboard. When reinstalled, this will result in the plastic tabs fitting more tightly on the wheel.
But, it's a fine balance between enough and too much. It is very easy to miss getting one of the tabs inside the wheel notch during installation. They will usually break off completely when that happens.
I use a little grease on the tabs so they slide into the wheel notches more easily.
The design sucks. I've lost several rear caps over the years and broken several of the plastic tabs. I've had the best luck silencing noisy caps by forcing foam insulation into the gap on each side.
try suburbanwheelcover, they have a metal ring that fits over the lug nuts to hold them on,made in taiwan, if you buy check the screws on the inside, i had to glue 2 screws in after a while because they stripped them out at the factory, damn foreign labor. they do not have a ford logo in the center.
As was mentioned the stock wheels are hub centric. And since they are aluminum rims with a hub centric design, you should be using the factory or comparable nuts that have the attached washer to allow the nut to tighten while leaving the washer still against the wheel. little cheesy chrome tapered lugnuts are not a good idea imo. The factory nuts are really good quality. Don't use tapered nuts on an aluminum wheel that is made to be hub centric and not lug centric.
I don't know why you wouldn't like to see the nice and burly full floater peeking out in the rear anyway. Just hit em with some John deere medium gloss and they will look good and the paint will never come off. I'm a big fan of JD black paint by the way. It's the shyt. I've used it for years with unbelievable results.
Go with the Alcoa hub covers, lug nuts, and lug covers. They fit well and look great. Available directly fron Alcoa or I think from Southwest Wheel. Below is a list of the part numbers. Do a search under the user name dtosh and there are pictures in his signature.
