Friendly Reminder....A/C Time

Last summer there was a huge post about cleaning out the evaporator coil assembly located behind the fan under the hood. Personally, I cleaned mine last year, and cleaned it again this year and flushed a lot more stuff out of there. I get a few Maple Helicopters and a lot of dust.
For those of you who have NOT cleaned your evaporator, you simply need to disconnect your blower, remove the 4 screws that are holding it to the housing, remove the blower motor and fan, then take a water hose and flush out the cooling fins located through the hole. You'll be able to see the fins in there and there is a drain hole for the water, so don't worry about the water.
You notice a BIG increase in velocity of air through the vents, and much lower vent temperatures as well..

Good luck,
A friendly reminder from your friend,

Tallfarmboy

Re: Friendly Reminder....A/C Time

Since I just bought my truck this past Dec., and wasn't a faithful reader of all this wisdom last summer, thanks for the reminder. I was just commenting today (94 degrees for the high) that my A/C seems cold enough, but I wish it would blow harder to cool the truck off quicker. I'm gonna clean mine 1st thing in the morning when I get off work.

Again.......THANKS!

Re: Friendly Reminder....A/C Time

Rich,

You might want to consider doing the A/C Mod, too. It blocks the hot water flowing through the heater core while the A/C is in the "off" and "Max" settings. Made a difference on my truck.

Re: Friendly Reminder....A/C Time

Oh yeah. Thanks a lot. I was just telling my wife last wek that I wish my fan blew harder. I don't know if my coil has ever been cleaned. I'll do this tonight.

Re: Friendly Reminder....A/C Time

Seems like this should be considered "routine maintenance" as big of a difference as it makes.
As a matter of fact, I think I'm gonna clean the FPR screen tomorrow as well...
BTW: I've got a Poor Boy A/C mod installed, an inline ball valve that I shut off in the summer.

Re: Friendly Reminder....A/C Time

Just install a shut off valve in one of your heater hoses. It shuts off the water to the heater core.

Re: Friendly Reminder....A/C Time

One more thing to do while you're in there. I bought some disinfectant spray for home A/C's and sprayed the evap (I can't remember the name - it was Bio something). It kills anything in there and makes for better smelling air.

Re: Friendly Reminder....A/C Time

I did mine today and it made a HUGE difference. The coils were filthy. It was black before I cleaned it and silver afterwards. Thanks for the tip!
