I am thinking of doing this when I install my new downpipe. I only want to do this if it will lower my EGT's. I was thinking of wiring for an exhaust brake but it doesn't sound like it works that great but if I can lose a little on the egt's I will do it. How much have you guys seen?? It has probably been beat to death but I couldn't find what I was looking for on the search page.
Thanks

I have read that gutting it lowers about 20*. Maybe some other chime in.
If you want, shoot me an email and I can send you instructions on how to do this, which will include pictures so you don't get too lost. I see guys using freeze plugs to close the opening left by the shaft once it is removed and (personal opinion here) I think this is a VERY bad idea. Freeze plugs were never designed or engineered to take that type of heat. A much better way to do it is to knock out the sleeve that the shaft rides in and tap the cast metal for a 1/2 inch pipe plug. Screw a pipe plug in it and go on down the road.
As much as I'm sure I will hear, "I've had a freeze plug for .... long and no problems", I've had at least two customers call me with the freeze plugs melted out. Not a problem if it happens around town and you just need to get home and take it apart. Larger problem while on vacation with the family and you can't run the heater or AC because of the exhaust piped into the cab.
The issue most guys wiring for exhaust brakes will not consider is that the solenoid is a 10v max unit and they are applying 12v to it. What they don't realize is that it is a segmented 12v signal that will actually close 100 percent at a 8v level. IF you decide to wire yours up, definitely reduce the 12v signal to an 8v max.
Again, I've had customers burn the solenoid, which isn't a problem around town but is when you are away. I don't know about you guys, but nothing ever breaks down in my driveway...

I actually have your instructions Dale I got a downpipe from you! I was going to do it this week end but my local hardware store didn't have anything bigger than 1/4"npt tap. I am headed out of town for 3 weeks for big trout in AK so I will probably have to wait until then. I was hoping for a 20-50* drop so I will probably do it and forget the brake idea,
Thanks

Make sure you block off the rod that acuated the door. i left mine in there and it leaks oil all over the motor now. I need to get in there, remove it and put a self tapping sheet metal screw with some sort of j/b weld and block it off.
