Halon system in your truck? first of all where does one find a halon system? halon 1301? 1211? I dont believe it would do any harm, it would just run out of oxygen and quit. halon depletes the 02 in the air. is there any particular reason you need one? where does it shoot the halon? is it a similar system to ones found on military aircraft? im intrigued...

Halon is a CFC. Plus it is also no longer produced. As far as I know only available with a license or for the military. Plus EXTREMELY DEADLY IF USED WRONG. It can kill you before you even know it. I am an Air Force Fire Fighter with a lot of training on this extinguishing agent. If you would want to go all out like that id look into a co2 system or dry chem. Dry chem corodes if dispensed. but not deadly or a cfc.

I thought they outlawed it, but I got oldtimers.
If I remember right when its heated(as in a fire) it produces phosgine(SP) gas, which is bad dodo.

yea ... Halon is outlawed now from what I know. We use FM200 here at our telecom site. Halon was toxic to people I believe.

Still have a grandfathered halon setup in our switchroom here but it can never be recharged. Better off to get the bottle setup they use on racecars and such

[/ QUOTE ] It breaks the chemical chain reaction that causes a fire. It also displaces the O2(oxygen). It's best used in a total flooding system. It's none corrosive to electronic or sensitive parts. When heated it does produce Phosgene gas. Which makes liquid in your lungs when breathed in.( Nice way to die). It's out lawed here in the U.S., Still made in Mexico and Canada. It suppose to deplete the Ozone when discharged.
It's highly effective in a total flooding system, not as effective in a portable extinguisher used out side.
Get yourself a good A/B/C, DRY CHEMICAL extiguisher. That will cover all aspects of what might, could or will burn in our trucks. It does make a hugh mess. It can be used from a safe distance.
Our trucks are replaceable. I get paid to fight fire for a living. I see alot of people who try to put out their own vehicles only to get burned or cut ETC.ETC. the list goes on. Not to mention all the plastics put off a nice Hydrogen cyanid.... Another painfull way to die.
It would suck to watch my truck burn. Especially after all the work I've done to it. As long as my family is safe. It's replaceable. Okay enough of the soap box.
I'm sorrry to hear about Magnum97's truck. the important thing is he and his family is safe. Carl

ccolby, you said it all. i was trying to before, however i was at work... and not supposed to be on here. damn DOD. not like that stops me from browsing the best site on the entire internet there is to see... Us military guys still have a limited quanity of halon flooding systems aboard our aircraft. that way if there is a small fire or problem, we can dump halon down the engine rather than foam and not ruin a multi million or even multibillion dollar airframe. tryin to save us taxpayers dollars, however when we handle it we are always masked up. safe dieseling to all.

You can buy halon extinguishers online. I have a stainless one in my truck. It can no longer be produced in the US but it can be reclaimed from existing systems that are being removed. That's my understanding at least. I just didn't want to corrode all my electrical wiring etc. if truck ever caught on fire. I'ts really expensive.

they have a halon replacement that is avalible, we have them in our line trucks just incase were in a substation and have an issue. i would still just use dry or co2. if ya use dry just gotta get the stuff washed off asap, but the corrosion from it is gonna be some of the least of your concerns
