home brew regulated return questions

1. What micron rating for the prepump filter? I am going to use a 2 micron post pump but not sure for the prepump.

2. Which regulator do i need this one Red regulator that is the one that i have seen used before, but they say that its only rated for alcahol/gasoline or this one black regulator that says it is rated for diesel

thanks, kevin

btw, this is on a 97

Re: home brew regulated return questions

I am gathering up the parts to do a electric system on mine also, since the fuel pump is leaking for the second time. I will be using a 30 micron pre pump and a 2 micron Cat filter after the pump. I have several filters to choose from at work, from Dahl, Racor, Cat etc. I work on boats thats use all of those filters. I still need to get the regulator, pump and the fuel lines that go to the back of the heads. Good Luck

Frank

Re: home brew regulated return questions

i know they have that regulator, i have a link to it in my first post, and i have seen others run it. does it have any problems handling diesel because it does not say it is rated for diesel like the black marine one does???

thanks,

kevin

P.S. im probably making this more difficult than it actually is

Re: home brew regulated return questions

I have been using Bean's kit for about 30,000 miles and it uses the red Aeromotive regulator. No problems. Worst case, I think Aeromotive sells rebuild kits for the regulators.

Re: home brew regulated return questions

I have the red regultator on my truck. I found out about the black "diesel rated" one after I had ordered. I called Aeromotive and they said that it should be just fine. I figure if it does have a problem the only thing that can be different is the diaphram material, which can be changed very easily.
So far 1 year and no problems.

If I were you I would run a Fleetguard FS1000 or FS1001 (shorter version) for the pre pump filter. I think it is a 10 micron rating. I have a FS1212 pre pump right now but the water separation abilities of the FS1000 are better.

Re: home brew regulated return questions

3405 pre pump 12 mic filter/water seperator and 3528 post pump 2 mic. red aeromotive regulator here with the lines and all being home made. I know it is an early 99 and not an OBS but I thought I could give some help. I just finished mine two days ago.

Re: home brew regulated return questions

On an OBS if you use rear fuel feed then you can reuse the existing return fuel lines to a front mounted regulator. I made the rear fuel rail feeds using the fuel rail plug and a drilled out Aeromotive steel 6-AN/1/4"npt straight male fitting with the thread cut off brazed together and a short radius Aeromotive tubing 90* female/6-AN fitting. Summit sells both the steel straight fitting and the short radius tubing 90* 6AN-female to -6 hose fitting. I didn't want to use the hard 90* fittings since they have to be indexed before brazing to orient the fitting properly and have a smaller hole in them. The short radius 90* fittings will give more firewall clearance than the regular radius fittings.

Pics, I need to see it. I have herd of it but never seen it. I think is what you are saying is you used the big fuel rail plug on the back of the head and not the 1/8" NPT feed holes on the top of the heads.

Aslo, why did you feed the heads from there?
