How to Prolong Tranny Life

Ive noticed my temps on my gauge are really where they should be, and because of that im planning on switching to a different cooler/lines, along with a new deeper tranny pan, and of course draining the old oil out and replacing it with some newer synthetic stuff.
As for cooler and such whats a good one to get, i dont really want to buy the 6.0L cause they are pretty pricey and the ones i have found that are cheaper arent in the best condition, so I guess whats my next best bet?
Thanks

Btw, anything else i can do to protect my tranny while towing up hills with my horses?

Hey, Moonshiner!!!

When I replaced my old '97 5-speed truck (got totalled out) with a '97 truck with an E4OD, I tried to do everything I could to help beat heat, and slightly build up the tranny a little.

I went with a newer model pan (I think it's from the 4R100; has a drain plug in it! ), an aftermarket cooler that was bigger than the stocker, a Factory Tech valve body with a shift kit basically installed, and a stock Ford 4R100 torque convertor from, I think again, a 2002 model...... Combined with kinda "babying" the thing along, the tranny has held up well. But I don't pull my little 5000 lb. travel trailer very often, nor move anything very heavy. Your results with your horse trailer may vary.

The cooler & the shift kit help beat the heat. The quicker shifts from the FT valve body help clutches slip a little less, creating less heat. The Ford torque convertor for the later model is just a little better unit than the stock E4OD unit was, I'm told. MIne's held up well, so I'm guessin' that must be true, but again, I don't tow heavy, and tend to kinda "baby" the goofy thing.... The pan simply makes chainging the filters easier, and fresh fluid is "a good thing". I can't recall if it increases fluid capacity at all.....

Honestly, I liked my 5-speed truck much more than I do this "I-wonder-if-this-thing-could-leave-me-stranded" E4OD....

Hope this helps,

Jimmie

Hey Moon- I pull a fifth wheel under exterme conditions. Heck, even been through Oregon many times. I agree with Tj, the tru cool is a great product, and easy to install. I also experimented with the 4r100 pan, matter of fact I have one from a 4x4 if you want to try it. I went with the PML pan with the extra 4 or so qts capacity. what ive read here is the larger the capacity, the longer it takes to cool down, thats why I shyed away from the other brand that holds allot more. The cooler and the pan really seemed to help last year.I pulled some hellish grades in hellish heat. From what ive experienced, the trans heating up really contributes to the engine heating up. I like to keep fresh oil all around, so I use dino oil,and change regularly. I usually drain the fluid once a year, then do a full service, filter and such every other.

what does that EMS thingy do?
I was looking at the Tru-cool also the Haydens ones
Hayden Transaver Plus, extra heavy duty & standard installation kit: Bulkpart transmission parts

Summitracing had like 5 different pans i think, pretty good prices too. i might go with the 4qt because of the more clearance i get.

I have to fix my gauge first cause when its reading the oil temp its at 230* and my IR thermometer reads the surface temp of the pan as 115* from 2" away.

The ESE eliminator is a shift kit and electronic pressure control (EPC) delete kit. The E4OD has line pressure electronically controlled and can tweaked with a chip. But its a flawed system. This kit removes electronic/PCM control of the pressures and makes them dependent on RPM and gear.

On your gauge where is the sender located on the trans? in the pan or in the pressure test port?

The unit is in the test port. How easy is the ESE to install? Do i need to drop the tranny? cause that doesnt sound fun...

to install the ESE its mostly just under the pan. in the accumulator body and solenoid body. There is a part to go in the pump but they say right in the directions that unless the tranny is already out then there is no need to install it.
