Does anyone know for certain whether or not I can use a late '99 HPOP with a '94.5 if the appropriate IPR is installed?
Thanks

You won't have the anti-drainback feature, so you may have extended cranking intervals waiting for oil pressure to build up.
Get the Adrenaline pump from Dieselsite instead, its better than the '99 AND you can get it made with the anti-drainback feature.

The early pumps had the anti-drainback valves in the pump. The later ones have it in the front cover. It will work (old cover, late pump), but will drain back causing longer cranking to start. You change to a later front cover (motor has to be pulled) or there is a mod to the older front covers that can be done (I'll have to look for a link), or some have added an accumulator to the system (PM members Nit or Powerstroke2000 unless they chime in on this one). I'm with Bill (get an Adrenaline). Cheers!
Patrick, are you actually refering to the engine front cover as having the anti-drainback or the HPOP resevoir housing?

I believe he is saying that in the early model powerstrokes, the anti-drainback valve was in the hpop itself, whereas in the later model, as a '99 would be, the drainback valve was in the front cover. I would also recommend installing an Adrenaline HPOP as was previously stated. Check out dieselsite.com, they sell the Adrenaline pump and they can answer any questions you have regarding hpops.

Let me ask again. Are you talking about the engine front cover or the HPOP resevoir/ gear housing? They are not the same thing. I would expect the resevoir to have the anti-drain back valve on the later models.

The anti-drainback is in the front cover itself, not the reservoir. Lifted from a writeup by Chris Nigh (on converting the 94 cover to the later anti-drainback):
Step 5 is to create the new standpipe hole in the timing cover.
To create the new hole in the timing cover to the new reservoir standpipe, I VERY CAREFULLY centered the F6TZ-6619-AA gasket on the timing cover. Center punch the timing cover where the additional hole is using the F6TZ-6619-AA gasket as a template.
At this point you will be making lots of metal shavings so be very careful and prep the area with lots of rags and such protecting any possible path into the engine. I used several layers so that I could remove them one at a time and vacuum very thoroughly between each layer I removed. I also used plenty of brake cleaner to wash the metal particles onto the rags before I removed them.
Drill a 3/16" hole down through the timing cover to the small upper drivers side cavity. Don’t have to be terribly careful other than making sure the hole is perpendicular to the timing cover. I have a buddy stand at the side of the truck and watch the front and back tilt, and I watched the left to right tilt and drilled away. Once that is done, you will need to make the special gasket relief tool, or in other words the 11/16" spade bit with the end tips ground down so that it will create a flat gasket relief in the timing cover. Here is my special tool: Nigh.org Photo and Video Gallery
With the special new drill bit, create the gasket relief the same way you drilled the hole. Be careful not to drill too deep. Go in steps to make sure that you get the depth right. I used the old gasket as a depth gauge. Here is what I ended up with: Nigh.org Photo and Video Gallery
Step 6 is to plug the existing hole in the timing cover.
Last part of the mod is to plug the hole in the front of the small cavity. I used a self tapping screw from the REAR of the timing cover coated with lots of RTV. Once it is in place, trim the excess screw that is protruding into the gear area. Nigh.org Photo and Video Gallery

That helps nashvillebill, Thanks. I see I will need a later model reservoir and gasket, but procedurally it looks quits simple. Hopefully I can secure one of these later pumps and reservoir and get it set up. I'll let you know. Unfortunately, the Adrenaline HPOP is not in the budget.

Sort of. The antidrainback was moved from the pump into the front cover in mid-96 (I think). Anti-drainback was in the pump up to engine serial number 201680. Cheers!
Thanks guys. This has been a huge help for me. We'll see which pump I end up with and how it turns out. When I hear her fire up for the first time I'll be stoked! I've had the truck a month and heard nada. Thanks again!
