I want LESS smoke.

So I just put in some BDP Stage 1s today and the truck hauls balls but smokes like a freight train. I knew this was going to happen, but unlike some others, I don't want to piss off everyone driving behind me.

Does an intercooler help or do I just need a better turbo?

What turbo do I need?

BDP has some turbos in the what's next, but nothing for sale yet.

Thanks Bean!!!

Re: I want LESS smoke.

Well, I have a 6 position chip with stock/economy/tow and 3 extreme burns. It smokes BAD in all but TOW and STOCK. If economy is the one with higher injection pressure (Like Bean told me) then it smokes more than TOW.

Some notes on the install:

I had already purchased 8 Motorcraft glow plugs, the two little rubber hoses that go from the Y pipe to the intake manifold and the gasket for the turbo. After pulling the valve covers I noticed that two of the wiring harnesses were burned so my dad went to get two valve cover gaskets and four new harnesses from Ford. I also wanted a new turbo inlet boot which happens to be a kit so $430.52 later I had:

Stage 1s
Eight new glow plugs
New turbo inlet kit
New valve cover gaskets
New under valve cover harnesses
New turbo gasket
New Y pipe boots

I'm just waiting on the 4" exhaust and the gauges now.

I traded Bean some cores for some stuff and his customer service blows away any other companies I have dealt with for my truck.

How often should air filters be changed? I have 34k on mine!

Thanks Bean.

Re: I want LESS smoke.

Tons of smoke means you need more air. Your turbo cant keep up. You need to either tone down the fuel with tuning or get a turbo that will support your air needs.

Re: I want LESS smoke.

you have stage ones and no guages. wow, scary

anyways, a IC will make it smoke worse, as it builds boost slower.....

I'll have the gauges soon and I won't be towing or running hard until then...

Re: I want LESS smoke.

Hey Mike, looks like you got them in ok.

Perforance injetcors with a chip will always smoke off the start, higher the program with more tip in fuel will smoke more. Once you get the ex in (gut the EBPV also) it will clean up onc ethe turbo is spooled. If you lay into it with no boost it will always smoke, just build about 5#'s before you letrrip.

Re: I want LESS smoke.

If you are trying to have less smoke, I would say get some more oil or more boost. I really haven't driven the '96 in my sig much since I got the stage 1's in, but it practically DOES NOT smoke. It will, however, light the tires at 25mph. I have already seen 30# of boost - I attribute that to the 1.0 housing. I don't notice any more lag than stock injectors with no intercooler.

"insert sarcasim here" Buy Bank's stuff, according to them a diesel isn't cool if it smokes, you are loosing power, yadda yadda. As soon as he has a street legal diesel beat a 10:13 in the quarter I may listen....

Re: I want LESS smoke.

No, Diesels don't have to smoke like freight trains.

Your smoke issue is probably in tuning. Or you have low ICP, weak HPOP.

In my opinion, get Big Oil.
