I'm thinking about doing the IDM mod. Those of you out there that have it, what do you think about it? Pro's & Con's if there are any. If it's worth the time & money. I've heard that this mod increases injector noise? What does that sound like?
Thanks for any reply!

I can't really comment on doing the mod as I did not do mine. I have heard from those that have done it and they say it is fairly easy to do. I like mine and have noticed no down side or injector noise. You will notice a little more low to mid range power.

What Chris said, I put mine in two days ago and I dont notice and more injector noise, the biggest change I noticed is when I'm going down the road at 50mph before idm now I'm going 60mph with my foot in the same spot. You know that (spot)does this make sense to ya ?

The job is not tough if you are careful. I followed Fordforgotten's instuctions, only I did it before he updated it to show 1/2 watt resistors whereas he showed 1/4 watt resistor up until a few months ago. I don't say this to criticize, I just mention it in case you had printed out the instructions before he updated the info!
God Bless,
TC

yep, the mod is fairly easy. just take your time with it and make sure you have a good variable temp soldering iron with a small tip. its also good to have a hot glue gun to put some hot glue around where you soldered so it does not come loose later from rattling around. ive done the mod for 4 local guys and a few others, no one has noticed any difference in noise but all have noticed a good low end power increase. good luck to ya.

Thanks all for the replies. Dan, where did you get your resistors from and do you have any pics of your IDM? I know of the one site from "Forgoten.net" I was wondering if there were any others. I'm confused if I need 1/4 or 1/2 watt resistors.

B or B,
The mod is very worthwhile-- having said that, I'm not sure that I could tell if I never knew it was done, but I do and the throttle tipin just 'feels' better. Definitely comes on better in low and mid; I have spots on my route where if encouraged it wouldn't spin the tires and with the same 'encouragement' it does now. My site (forgotton.net) is the only one Im aware of that is openly posting the info.
While a 1/4 watt resistor will work, I now recommend using a 1/2 watt resistor just for some headroom.
If you do the math, (ohms law, voltage/resistance/amperage calculations followed by amperage/voltage calculations) you'll find that your running right at 1/4 watt of power, thru a 1/4 watt resistor. So going to a 1/2 watt just gives a little beathing room.
The 1/4 watt resistors were used for a long time (thats what I found inside the pics posted on my page, and it was supposed to have been a DI modded IDM).
I believe Digi-Key will have the 1/2 watt resistors too.
I used the 1/4 watt resistor back in June ('06) and have not had any problems. In that time we have towed our trailer to California and back, no problems w/ the 1/4 watt. If I did another one I'd go for the headroom Daryl mentions!
When you order from Didgi-Key have them ship 1st class mail and that will save you some money. The Grey silicone from Ford is the most expensive part of the whole deal.
digikey part number for the 75k ohm 1/2 watt resitors: PPC75.0KXCT-ND
the resitors are cheap but they get ya on the shipping and handling, probably be around $10 to your door for 5 resitors. definitely go with the GOOD RTV at the dealer. tell them you want the stuff for the 7.3 diesel, it'll run ya around $20 for a half caulk tube, which is more than enough to do your IDM. i dont have any pics, just followed what i saw on Forgotten's website and all was well. good luck .

Sorry, but I'm just a little confused... Yea.. I know whats new
But as I read Dayl's website, forgotten.net about the IDM mod, I don't know what value resistor to use for what voltage I want out of the IDM.
here is what I cut and pasted from his web site. The IDM-100 and IDM-110 is what I need help with...seems the resistors are the same???
IDM-100 uses a 75.0k Ohm (75,000 ohm) 1/2 watt 1% tolerance Metal Film resistor
IDM-110 uses a 75.0k Ohm (75,000) 1/2 watt 1% tolerance Metal Film resistor IDM-120 uses a 73.2k Ohm (73,200) 1/2 watt 1% tolerance Metal Film resistor
DigiKey sells the needed resistors: 75.0KX (Violet-Green-Black-Red-Brown) 73.2KX (Violet-Orange-Red-Red-Brown)
Does the Nomenclature IDM-xxx siginify the type of IDM you have or the voltage out? I guess this is the point of my confusion, combined with the resistor question...
Have I totaly confused the issue and am thinking too much or what???
I couldn't sleep last night and read this post, thought I could go back to sleep and read it again this morning and it would be clear, NOT...
Thanks in advance for clearing this up for me, and I'm really a pretty good with a soldering pencil, but here lately thinking is up for grabs...
