Power Strokes 1994-1997 Upgrades and AftermarketUpgrading or adding OEM or aftermarket equipment to your 1994-1997 Ford F-Series with Power Stroke engine.
I took my truck into the shop to have the front main seal replaced. The mechanic ran a power distribution test, since he thought my truck sounded funny, and is telling me that I have a failed injector on cylinder 7. I don't know a whole lot about injectors, other than how they work. I would like to know the best method for purchasing injectors (I have looked at various cites and I cannot tell if I would be paying for 8 injectors or just one). Should I just replace one or should I replace them all? Who makes the best bang for your buck and how hard would this be to do on my own? Or should I just have the mechanic do the job? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. BTW I think I would like to keep the truck stock, I am not looking for any fancy-schmancy HP increasing injectors, although an increase in mpg would be nice. I don't have a chip or tuner and have not yet got gauges, so I think keeping things stock is the way to go. THANKS!

How many miles are on the truck? You might be able to replace just the one if the others are in good shape. It could also be as simple as a bad solenoid, a loose poppet screw under the solenoid, or bad connection at the valvecover gasket (melted/burned, etc). Cheers!
Truck has 186,000 miles. I hope it's a cheap problem! How do I ensure that my mechanic has tested for just the injector?

What are good brands/sources for injectors? I am probably going to replace all of them, as soon as my blessed student loan comes in! I am planning on keeping it "stock" but I still would like suggestions as to who is the best bang for my buck. Thanks!

Probably Jim at Rosewood Diesel aka DIY-Injectors dot com
Ask him what tests he did, results. Did it have a code? Contribution and buzz test?

The procedure for replacing the injectors is fairly straightforward. Requires only standard mechanics tools: 3/8"- and 1/4" drive standard and deep metric sockets, some extensions and a flex-joint. Some needle-nose pliers can be handy. A couple of bolts will require a combination wrench.
Most sets of instructions will tell you to remove the glow plugs and turn the engine over with a bar/wrench to clear the oil that may leak down into the cylinders. Two things that go along with that: 1) It's a great time to put new glow plugs in. 2) DO NOT USE THE STARTER to turn over the engine until after you have turned it a few full turns by hand. The starter will shoot the oil out fast enough to knock your hat off and repaint any nearby walls!
When I replaced my injectors, I went with rebuilt stage-1 injectors from Beans. I don't have the machine shop access or technical confidence to do a DIY rebuild. Plus, I don't have the specialized injector flow testing equipment, so there would be no way of knowing if I had a properly balanced set when I was done. Finally, I like the stage-1's because they're relatively inexpensive, they perform similarly to stock injectors when the tuning is stock and they leave open the option of adding more power later if I choose to get a chip someday.
Good luck,
RD
