intercooler

is putting a intercooler from a 99 or newed PSD be benificial for my 97 non intercooled?
I already have a chip waiting to get a different style (SCT chip) stock intake w/ 3" down pipe and gutted cat. so as far as these mods go will the intercooler make a difference?

Re: intercooler

Hey eblosser!

I think the general premise is that if you monitor your exhaust temps and your pre-turbo temps stay under 1,250 you are probably OK without. When the level of mods you have done push your EGT's over 1,250, you need to start looking for ways to reduce the EGT's, a 99+ I/C is one of several ways to keep exhaust temps in check.

I retro'd a SD I/C into my truck to allow me to tow our travel trailer while running a race burn chip. This afforded me conservative EGT's for the long hauls up and over mountain passes, without walking the fine line of EGTs. Again, there are other ways of addressing high EGT's, I/C is one of them!

Hope that helps!

God Bless,

TC

Re: intercooler

Most definitely! I have an '01 Superduty intercooler, and it has dropped the "exhaust gas temps" by about 200°F! It is most notably noticed when towing, but overall keep the EGT's down to a liveable level!
Some notice more lag, but I found I had no lag issues, which I
personally believe my IDM mod happened to eliminate, but overall, the intercooler mod is definitely worthwhile.
You'll find alot of guys on here have done this modification, and you can find more info on it at Geoff's GTS Motorsports site. Just click on the "Ford Powerstroke" link, and you will find the "Intercooler" link.
You can actually see his Intercooler Instructions at this link.

There are a few more Instructions here if you'd like to check them out..

Geoff has a "kit" that includes the brackets needed, as well as the intercooler piping needed to fit our early trucks.

Re: intercooler

Yes, it's necessary. Why do you think all the late model diesels run them? The piping is simple. I built my own with stainless 3", but any exhaust shop can do it for you(that does 3" anyway), CHEAP! Just install the IC and find a reputable exhaust shop to build your pipes. Shouldn't be more then $200.

Re: intercooler

Well if you have any exhaust shop build your pipes for you they aren't going to work as well as they should because all the bends will be drasticly reduced in size as exhaust shops don't have mandrel benders. You want to use mandrel bent pipe so that the size stays the same all the way through the bend and doesn't get crimped on the inside of the bend like exhaust shops do it.

Re: intercooler

What about getting some Super Duty stock pipes and modding them to fit? That's my plan. Just need to get a hold of the parts.

Re: intercooler

They don't go through the engine compartment very well. Especially on the passengers side.

When I called all the exhaust shops around here NONE of them had mandrel benders. Regular exhaust shops don't as they are WAY more expensive than the standard benders they usually use and the majority of their customers wouldn't want to pay the prices for the more expensive mandrel bends as a lot of their work it repair work not necessarily performance work. Most likely they could order in some mandrel U bends but you could order them up just as easily and probably for cheaper from somewhere like Summit.

Yes this will work, I used them without modding them but they didnt fit real well and I made a custom ypipe and stuff to fit them. If you cut them and repositioned them they will work just gotta do a little fab work and welding.

Re: intercooler

Cool, that's the plan then. It doesn't look too hard to fab up a y-pipe either. 135 mig welder and bandsaw are my best friends
