Intercooler or not

I'm trying to decide to install an IC or not. I have a 2001 7.3 IC and the Y-pipe off an early 99. I need to make the pipes.

Mods to my 97 F350--Tymar intake, DP & 5" exhaust, 1.0 turbo, Banks Stinger Plus Chip, Gauges-Pyro, Boost, Trans. In your opinion, would the IC help in the performance area??? Some say yes, some say no, unless I do additional mods such as injectors or another type of chip.

I do tow a 9K pound trailer occasionally and I know an IC would lower EGTs but some say it would lower the boost and in turn, hunt performance and power.

Re: Intercooler or not

I put an IC on the truck listed in my sig...I noticed a slight decrease in boost pressure (not really that big of a deal, I was worried about it though). I would do it again for sure...It's really nice to be able to climb through the mountains empty or pulling without having to worry as much about the EGT's...I recommend it!

Re: Intercooler or not

If you already have it I would say yes for sure. It will decrease boost and some response. It will lower temps, boost and raise fuel mileage.

Re: Intercooler or not

In addition to a IC get rid of the banks chip and get a real one...DP or Wildman, which ever you like.

Re: Intercooler or not

You will really like having the I/C installed. I do not know how quick a spool up your turbo does now, but with the 1.0 you should be sitting pretty!! I would think that the difference in spool time from your turbo will be negligable. When I first put the ATS one on, the boost dropped like 5 pounds, then I found I forgot to tighten a boot!!! Oooooops! Now my boost is 2 lbs less than before, with much better power, and I can now make boost without heat. Guys always said with more boost comes better cooling. Well, for me the more boost, the more heat. Now I can boost to 20 lbs and never back out with the fifth wheel in tow. Really nice!! Coarse I think mine is so little different between before and after, becasue of Tony's programming. It already pulled great from his low boost fueling. I say do it, it will make you a believer!!

Re: Intercooler or not

Thanks for the responses. What all of you recommended is exactly what I was going to do. Install the IC and get a better chip. Then when I ordered my Tymar intake and 5" inch exhaust, Dale said I did not need it and to get rid of it because it would not flow enough CFM. This is when I became somewhat unsure on whether to use it or not. I'm still leaning towards using it because of the lower EGTs. Dale also recommended that I replace the 1.0 housing with the stock one because it would flow more air.

Re: Intercooler or not

Seems to me that you would want to use the 6.0 IC instead of the 7.3...

Re: Intercooler or not

I dont have any technical knowledge to put down here (like CFM etc...) but I can tell you that I was really worried about hurting performance with the addition of the IC (I have stock injectors) and I found that there is a very slight drop in boost and a hair of lag off the line, but really the positive affects of the IC outweight the negatives BIG time IMO.

Re: Intercooler or not

I highly respect Dale but hes dead wrong about the IC Install it and the 1.0 housing it will be a great combo for up to stage 1's...if ya move to 2's go back to the stock housing. The 6.0 cooler is better so sell your if ya want.

Re: Intercooler or not

Nivrig do you pull any thing with your truck? IF you do put that IC on it help pulling a load even on flat ground I'M sorry I did not do it sooner. The stock IC out of a sd is not a bad IC for the $$$ it is

Re: Intercooler or not

Yes, I pull a camper weighing about 9K, 10K with beer. I'm going to go ahead and put the 7.3 IC on beings I have it. I also have the 99 intake. I need the pipes. I can make them or buy them. Is GTS the only one that makes them for our trucks???

As I previously mentioned, the mods to my 97 F350 are, Tymar intake, DP & 5" exhaust, 1.0 turbo, Banks Stinger Plus Chip, Gauges-Pyro, Boost, Trans.

I will replace the Banks chip, who do you all recommend, Tony, Dale or????? I'm not out to race the truck, that's for the my other toys. I more interested in towing power and maybe a little better mileage.

Re: Intercooler or not

Either one..I went with Tony and so has I belive the majority of OBS guys but like I said either one can set you up. I'd get a TDO burn for your trans and ya might want to call BTS to see what you can do to make your trans survive awile Your going to need to save some $$$ for a real trans as you WILL kill it with the HP and torque that 2's will give ya

I hope your camper only weights 6k

Re: Intercooler or not

I'm not a 100% sure, but I think Banks sells a kit for OBS and is cheaper then GTS. Least thats what I have heard.
