Hi, the syncros in my ZF 5 spd have been going for a while, I have 430,000 kms on it but it was still very drivable until about a week ago when shifting into 4th became almost impossible. I took tranny out tonight and the kevlar pilot bearing is in pieces. I put the southbend clutch in about 2 yrs ago and has about 60,000 kms on it. Anyone else had one of these fail? should I just replace it could this an indicator of something else?
cheers
Hi Patrick, thanks for the response. there does not appear very much play at all in the input shaft. The clutch is toast looks like one of the springs let go. I probably have 40k on this clutch so not very good compared to what I put on the stock setup
I'm glad you posted that picture! Mine did the same thing at 50k (trans input shaft had a bunch of play anyway at 249k), but my throwout bearing grenaded also (only 50k on it too). I don't know if the disc spring tookout the throwout bearing or if the throwout bearing tookout the disc spring. My clutch plate was OK, however and the new clutch disc from SBC looks like a much better design (cost about $150 though). No problems now (new tranny, disc, throwout bearing and release lever). I wonder how many other folks with the SBCs have had similar experiences? Cheers!
I've got a SB clutch w/ only about 15k miles, and the throw-out bearing is shot. I don't drive the truck much at all anymore, so I've been putting off pulling the tranny to replace it.
Hi, thanks for the reply. I changed everything out yesterday to a new SBC con ofe so hopefully that will work better. It looks a heavier duty set up. The throw out bearing for sure is a beefier unit than the con o one I took out which was in one piece still. I hope I get some decent mileage from this one.
Cheers
