LF777 by-pass filter

I installed an LF777 by-pass filter on my truck this weekend. I found that cummins had a filter base available especially for installing the 777. The base had a restriction already built into it on the return side so i didn't have to worry about any of that stuff. I ended up putting it back and behind my transfer case. I've been driving it around for about a day now and it's been good so far. My oil was about a quart low when i installed the filter and after i fired my truck up i checked it again and it took about a gallon to top off the oil level.

Re: LF777 by-pass filter

The filter bases I have seen have a .090 passage. That is too big for a 7.3. What size was yours?

according to Amsoil parts list the orfice in their bypass filter bases is .092 inch. so why is it too big for the 7.3?
here is the link. look toward the bottom.

If Amsoil recommends a .092 for a 7.3 you will have to ask them why they recommend it, I don't know why.

I do disagree with the recommendation. I think it is to big. I wouldn't go over .040 on a fixed orifice.

why? will it cause to much loss of oil pressure?
im just trying to find the right orfice for my setup without hurting my engine.

Re: LF777 by-pass filter

I went with a 1/16 drill bit that is roughly .060, i have no drop in oil pressure.

The only way to know exactly what effect it has is to monitor the before and after oil pressure. My concern would be at hot idle.

Re: LF777 by-pass filter

I don't see anything wrong with .060, i am not changing mine till someone shows me i'm wrong.
