Just a general question. I was thinking about installing a Tymar type intake on my 97, and I started to wonder if it would really add any useful performance....
If I understand correctly, a diesel engine typically pumps in more air than it needs under most throttle conditions. The power is regulated by how much fuel is injected. If this is true, how does better breathing help power unless you are really pushing the engine to max power levels?
I usually drive around empty, so the engine doesn't have to work very hard...would a Tymar be a waste of money?
The more air you can feed these beasts the better they like it! Open up the intake and get rid of that pesky kitty and muffler, and let it breath, better low end power without a doubt, will run more efficient with better fuel milage, get the Tymar you can't go wrong!

Then get rid of that stock smashed down pipe if you still got it, then get ready to hear the turbo whistle!!

By freeing up the air flow it will let the turbo spool more freely. While it most likely won't give you much peak power it will let the power come on sooner because the turbo will be able to spin up faster. Also the more air you can get in the engine the lower your EGTs are going to be. This also holds true for the cooler air you can get in it. I'd go with something like an AFE intake but it is about twice the money but it does come with a heat shield and a reuseable filter that is much better than many other reuseable filters on the market. In the end I guess you get what you pay for.
The Tymar not only gives you more air, it does a much better job of filtering which will extend the life of your turbo and motor. Some guys have had problems with the stock air box and that K&N you are running,(not sealing properly).
