Yeah, the modern equivalent of a 2-speed axle is an auxiliary transmission by either GearVendors or U.S.Gear. Not cheap, at around $3,000 for the parts, but lots of folks wouldn't be without one - especially if they do a lot of empty cruising.

U.S.Gear Dual Range Auxiliary Transmissions, Overdrive and Underdrive

BTW, if folks try to look up a '95 F-450, they're not going to find it. There's no such thing as an F-450 before the 1999 model year. So did you mean the regular cab 4x2 chassis cab truck Ford called the Superduty that was more than an F-350 dually but not as much truck as the later F-450?

Unfortunatly the F Superduties are a special gearvendors because of the driveline mounted parking brake, but it was made and I have seen them on ebay. There are two good vendors that regularly have rebuilt units on ebay, I have dealt with both.

My first choice would be a US gear for this truck, it would work just like a 2 speed axle. Since US gear was designed to go between trans and transfer case, and F SD's use a 4x4 trans, the park brake would go on the back of it. You just need a 87-97 ZF 4x4 US Gear box. US Gear is rugged and simple. Gearvendors has electroncs and is smooth but will have problems if left in OD below 20 mph, and has a limit to downhill braking as well.

Thanks for the feedback, have picked up the same info on gearvender. I often gross out in the 35,000lb. range and was told gvs will not stand up. Am trying to get my mpgs up as well take the strain off the lower rpms.

Go with US Gear. There also used to be a unit called a Mitchell that was very tough. Company is still in business, parts still available, but no new units.

I think you would do a lot better with the auxilary trans. It mounts free-standing behind the trans, not attached, only the front driveshaft and rear driveshaft. Ask RLDSL on here about his. Probably a lot less than GV and I think a bit stronger.
DOWNSIDE : You will have to fabricate the mounting and have the driveshafts made. If you are not able to cut, fab. and a bit of design work. You will also have to fabricate the shifter.
ADVANTAGE ; This, with the under - direct - over plus the 5 speed will give a total of 15 forward gears plus the three reverse.
With a bit of planning and fore-thought this can be better than a handle on coffee cup. I am sure that with the loads you say, you will walk through them with the ease of a Sunday drive.
Just my opinion ( I have used this set-up)

IMO get some HP upgrades..will make towing way easyer than just getting gears. I'd add a bd brake to help stop.
