Muffler/Resonator opinions... please.

Alrighty... Dale I. and me had a long phone convo about mufflers and resonators, unfortunately I just don't know half of the technical jargon that was talked about... heck... I'm a newbie to this exhaust stuff.

I have the 3" to 4" DP straight pipe, and exiting in front of the rear tire with a 5" turned down tip. I get the most beautiful sound from this thing one could ever ask for.... when gentle on the fuel pedal. Now, if I gun it... .I get the low rumble that almost drowns out that sweet turbo whine.

How do I 'muffle' that low rumble sound so one can hear that turbo whine with more clarity?

What options do I have that will offer that??

All I want are opinions to save me time so I can formulate my own decision.
By no means will I look down on someone because or knock anyones opinion just because I bought something and it wasn't right for me.
I'm a big boy, I can make my decisions. But I need a hand.

I guess if a supplier offers advice on personal taste sounds, and I don't like it... I could turn into an evil-part-returning-never-buy-from-this-dude-again type of customer. Naaaa, not me... not my style. ( but I guess it is a good rule to live by for a business )
( No offence Dale, if you are reading this... I'll still be true to your stuff no matter how much of a headache I have after chatting with ya )

Any input? Education? Advice?
Anything?

Re: Muffler/Resonator opinions... please.

What sound you like is in the ear of the listener...everyone is different.I absolutly love the sound of the magnaflow muffler I have exiting out the rear @ the stock location. My turbo starts singing @ about 7 lbs of boost and I hear it up to about 12lbs with the windows rolled up. With Wildmans burns that ain't a very long time!! With the windows down I hear all the deep rumble and sweet v-8 exhaust note I want to hear....and no flutter...The exact model number is only available with the full xl dp back system, but Jerry @ GOS knows which magnaflow single muffler purchase matches it. If you think you want to go that route, give him a call or e-mail.....

Re: Muffler/Resonator opinions... please.

ThreeStar.... yeah, I do realize that everyone is different. I was looking more for those folks that have the same or similar exhuast system as I now have.... and any experiences

I was driving around studying the sounds.... the turbo whine is a constant sound ( which I want to preserve ). The rest of the noise I suppose is the 'knocking' sound or intermittant sound that is caused by the pistons. What is the common name of that intermittant noise? Is it flutter? Drone? whap-whap-whap noise?
Whatever that sound is, I want to muffle it. And I want to do it without silencing the turbo whine.

Is that possible to do this with a particular device? From what I have found looking back, seems like a longer free-flow muffler will do this ( I think ), but not the short resonators.

Re: Muffler/Resonator opinions... please.

Engineguy, you must be talking about whine from the exhaust, not the intake.I know what you mean. I was running straight 5" and loved the sound, whine while just tooling around. Just wasn't happy w/ the sound at WOT, so I put a 5" straight thru muff on it, to see what it would sound like. With the muff it sounds ALOT better at WOT and brought out some of the low tones at part throttle. The bad part is it really cut down on the whine from the tailpipe. It's still there, you just can't hear it from the driver's seat. I'm prob going to take the muff back off. And yea,I guess you call the unmuffed sound that you don't like,"flutter".

Re: Muffler/Resonator opinions... please.

Bingo! Yup... the exhaust whine. The intake whine is perfect and I'm not gonna touch it.

Thanks for the info.

Re: Muffler/Resonator opinions... please.

EquineGuy,

For about a year or so I ran a straight through 4" exhaust from the DP in stock location. When I would open it up there was significant harsh exhaust tone and flutter and when towing the TT found it too much on long trips. I made a 14" long Stainless 6" diameter resonator (straight through) that takes a lot of the harshness out of the exhaust tone and you can still hear the turbo out the back end. Have never ran a muffler so I can't really compare, but would do the resonator again. Have you tried different sized exhaust tips, it made a difference on mine too. I have a 5" with a 45 degree bevel cut in the end.

Re: Muffler/Resonator opinions... please.

I have about the same setup as you. The "popping sound" I think is what they call it at WOT I don't get, but still have the lovely turbo wine.

Re: Muffler/Resonator opinions... please.

I have heard of folks reversing the muffler.... is this supposed to be some kinda dual option?
