It's gonna vibrate and drive you nuts!! Just bend the cab seam back a little wider than what's touching.

I used a baseball bat against the engine block to bend the seam back so my 4 incher would clear. Even so, sometimes when towing or when articulated offroad the pipe will rub. Try to insulate the backside of the pipe (cab side) or your wife will be complaining how hot the floor gets in the summer.

Just to reiterate the cab bushing being shot or sagging, check out the photo of my downpipe:

That hole is bigger around than a quarter and through all the way. This hole is a result of the cab rubbing the downpipe from said bad cab bushings. Yes, the seam was cut multiple times and persuaded with a concrete crowbar and ballpeen hammer. There was more than a 1/2inch clearance at the time I installed this downpipe. Another result some forget about a cab rubbing on the downpipe is collarteral damage to other parts:

That photo is the upper portion of the downpipe. You can get an idea as to the size of that rub spot based on my phat phinger. It was nearly completely through as well, the cracks were formed and beginning the burn thru. The rub is from the up-pipe. Yes sir, there is that much stress at it happens over a long, long period of time. Pipe was in the truck over 150,000 miles.

Good part is the heat shield was removed when I did the original installation and then put back in place. Difficult to do with everything in the way. However, not damaging the shield probably saved the cab from getting a burn thru onto the passengers feet.

Just something to think about in checking cab bushings....

Bret

Try saving them as .jpg files, not .bmp

Bugman, the pics were in my gmail account. I copied the http out of the properties and pasted. When I preview the post, the pics show up, but when it is posted, the pics go away. I'll try uploading them another way and see what happens.

If you use a "direct link" you'll need to take the HTTP// stuff out of the pop up window for inserting an image.

If you have the pictures stored on your computer you can just upload them to the thread by clicking on the paper clip next to the smillie face. If not they need to be hosted by a site that will allow you to share them.

Had my wife give me a hand with loading them this time, so lets see if it works. Even if I preview the post, I can see the pics. First pic is the rubbing from the exhaust up-pipe. Second pic is the hole that rubbed through at the cab seam.

4"? I've only seen 3" down pipe that taper to a larger diameter. Where does one find a 4" (or even a 3-1/2") down pipe?

Thanks for the pics Bret_B! Any chance you have some pics with the down pipe removed that shows where it was rubbing? This may help future installers focus their clearance efforts in the correct location.
