New exhaust "noises" after 3" SS downpipe install

Greetings,

Took everyones advice and installed a SS 3" downpipe from City Muffler in OKC. I know for sure I have a minor firwall/fender claearance problem, but whats bothering most is the additional"noise/s" that I am now hearing form the exhaust. Its a sort of rattling, growling noise when you slow down from hiway speeds to say, turn off the highway or roll up to a stop light. I have an automatic and it makes an even louder noise if you are manually in, say 2nd gear, run the rpm up, then back out of it. Jeez it sounds like the world is coming to an end. You guys experienced this?

I will say this though, the turbo whistle is easy to hear now and I see how it could become addidctive. Seems like the truck is breathing much easier now. The flat pipe that came out couldn't be good for exhaust flow, as you guys have already proven with your egt readings.

Any ideas about the new noise? Is it normal and I need to get used to it?

Thanks,
Rlynn

No it is not normal, you must have the DP rubbing the fiewall some place. You need to make sure you have the lip beat up so there is no contact between the DP and any place on the truck body or frame. I used the BFH method. Some have used a large pipe to pry and some have even used porta-powers to bend it up for clearance.
Good luck.

I had the same problem with mine after the downpipe install, like ZilardF250 said, the DP is still rubbing against the firewall.

Check the clamp to bellhousing clearance. The engine "twists" under torque and the clamp can hit the transmission. Reposition the clamp, or (if it's a standard muffler clamp) change the clamp to a band clamp.

Re: New exhaust "noises" after 3" SS downpipe install

I bought my downpipe from them and I had to bend the body seam about 1/4in in to give me about 3/8in space between the seam and pipe. The only trouble I had was the piece that conects the kat to the upper part of the downpipe was about 1 1/2in too short. I had to get a coupling made to join the two pieces of the downpipe. Other than that is great...love the extra power and sound too!

Re: New exhaust "noises" after 3" SS downpipe install

Thanks to everyone for their valued responses. I'm taking the truck in Monday to have the muffler shop guys work on the clearance issue. While I am sure some of the noise is from the interference fit, I can't help but think that their is something else making noise. Soon as I get the clearance issue resolved I will report if all the noises subside.
