New lift pump and HPOP.... No start

Hey guys,
I just installed a new lift pump (old one leaked out the weep hole) and at the same time I changed the HPOP to one off a SD. Everything went O.K. during the install (except lift pump broke off in the motor but I was still able to get it out with a pair of pliers ). It started after some cranking and ran rough but it eventually smoothed out. I then shut the truck off after maybe 15 min. When I went to start it again, it just turned over but wouldn't fire. I then held the schrader valve open on the FPR while my cousin cranked and it started. There was no fuel at the beginning but then it started spraying out and the truck started. I figured it was air in the system so i took it down the road a couple of times and ran it hard. When I tried starting it later, again no start unless I held the valve open. This continued all morning. Then, this afternoon, it started every time by itself . What does this mean and will it do it again. I geuss I'll find out tomorrow morning.
Another thing, when I downshift from third to second, the truck wants to stall. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks

Re: New lift pump and HPOP.... No start

Can't commment on the stalling but as far as hard starting goes I had the same issue when I did injector O-rings. I put nearly a hundred miles on it before it would fire on initial crank, until then it would crank for roughly 3-5 seconds before starting.

Re: New lift pump and HPOP.... No start

Thats odd i wouldn't think you would have air in your fuel system that long do you think its possibly just coincedence it started when you pushed the schraider valve when really you had air in your injector oil system cause this is what your symptoms sound like to me

Re: New lift pump and HPOP.... No start

All right,
Has been starting ever since I made this post (exept once last night). Other than that its been starting but harder than normal (air in the system?) It has been three days now so I'm hoping it will clear up real soon.

well how many miles have you driven in the three days air in the HPOP can be hard to get out Is your glow plug system in good working order all that work on the top of the motor any wires maybe get unhooked or damaged

Re: New lift pump and HPOP.... No start

just my 2 cents if you want to try. over the summer i pulled my engine and to get everything primed and bleed air out i just filled the fuel bowl, and new oil in the crank case. someone on TDS told me to bleed the system of air you can disconnect the valve cover harness at all 4 connectors and jsut turn the key a few times. (dont let the starter run for more than 15-30 seconds) then reconnect the harnesses and start it. i remember i had no problems at all. it fired up first try and no hard starts after it sat. and just last weekend i pulled my hpop and had the same issue. it would take 1-2 good long cranks to get it to start. about 3 days later im back to hold the key forward for a second and it starts. i think air jsut needs to bleed out.
good luck
geoff
