New Milemarker 12k,Winch Should I wire it at 12v or 24v???

Whats the pros and cons of each way?I would think it would operate better on 24v and since we have 2 batteries,Walla 24v,Instructions say it can be wired either way

In order to run both batteries to the starter they are wired parallel (+ to + and - to -). To get 24 volt you have to wire them in series, battery #1 positive to + on winch, battery #1 negative to battery #2 positive then battery #2 negative to winch to get your 24 volt. That will create a short. You cannot run them in parallel and series at the same time.

Go with 12 volt.

Re: New Milemarker 12k,Winch Should I wire it at 12v or 24v???

Our trucks are wired as 12 volt systems. The batteries are in parallel. The driver battery is the secondary battery and the pos cable goes to the pos post on the pass side. If it was 24 volts, the pos on one would go to the neg on the other side. I think the older diesels are 24v systems, but not the powerstrokes.

There is no way to get 24 volts out of our trucks, so you are stuck with 12v..

(whoops someone just beat me to the punch.. heh)

There is a way to get 24 volts to the winch. Many old 18 wheelers had 24 volt starters and 12 volt everything else. You need a giant solenoid called a series/parallel switch. But I would wire it 12 volts if it were mine.
