Newbie clutch question

Well, while I wait for my truck to come out of the shop (F250 vs Mazda at 60mph... ), I've been pretty set on some BDP Stage I's, chip, all the good stuff. Not that I haven't been before, but now I know what I want...and I want it now!

Anyways, I know I'll need a new clutch, I'm looking at the SBC Con O. $700 I'd rather not spend but I know I have to My question is, can I run the stock clutch for long? I mean am I going to risk breaking anything else down there, or can I just simply wait for it to burn up and have a new one ready?

Oh also, I know the DMFW is crap and should be replaced, but what actually happens to it when it "goes out" (something I can't seem to find for the life of me)??!

Total rookie here, but I love this place. I've been reading these forums for months researching everything I can think of. I even learned all the cool terms everyone uses gotta say it took me a lot more searching on each one to figure it all out though. Took me forever just to figure out what HPOP stood for!

Expect me back with more q's

Re: Newbie clutch question

Well, if you know for sure you are going to get the injectors, get the clutch first, cuz once you feel the power, your stocker won't last long. Unless you grenade the dmfw, your clutch will just get to where it slips so bad the truck won't move, which will take about 3-4 days after injector install if you hammer it.

The other option you have is to order the injectors and a chip and then tell them to keep the chip until you get your clutch in, that way you won't have the power available.

Re: Newbie clutch question

The flywheel will begin to rattle throughout the rpm range. It will be very noticable at stop lights etc. It sounds like it wants to come through the floorboard. When you shut the truck off if will also shake "violently". It really sounds like something is coming apart.... you'll know it when you hear it. When it comes apart it can really cause some damage... ask Travis (MoreMPH).

If you are going to put injectors and a chip in it, you are definately going to need a clutch. I am going to be putting a SBC Con OFE in my truck tonight. The OFE will give you a little more insurance than the Con O, and you will need this even with the small injectors.

Cracked bellhousing, which pretty much trashes the tranny, as you can't replace just the bellhousing, i would just do the clutch as soon as you can.

Re: Newbie clutch question

I think a lot of people might try to talk you into the OFE, that's what I have and I'd recommend it. Not much more $ for the extra holding power, and it really drives as smooth or better than the stock clutch.

Re: Newbie clutch question

Talk to Bean about a total package, the stage I's, a chip with custom burns and your clutch, could make a package deal for you...there is no one, in my expierence, that works harder for his customers... BDP

Re: Newbie clutch question

Oh I didn't know he provides clutches as well?

I'm looking at Bean's 340hp mod package (Stage I's, all exhaust and intake, chip...) as my truck is completely stock. I doubt I will be putting enough power to need the OFE though? No plans for mods past these....yet

I know I need to do some sort of clutch replacement anyways. My flywheel will probably be going anytime now...no rattling or anything with it running, but I get a nice distinctive rattling/shaking sound when I shut the engine off. It's been there for about as long as I can remember having it (maybe 30k miles, it was my dad's before that, not sure if I've noticed it then or not).

RyanPSD, there's no one on this forum that knows what to do and how to do it any better than Bean.....this is how he earns his living. Give him a call. Even if you never do any business together, he will still help you out with good advise and recommendations....best of both worlds...

Re: Newbie clutch question

I don't pull/haul anything so that was my initial reasoning for seeing how long the stock clutch would last with this setup. I doubted it would very long anyways...also why I think the Con O will be fine as opposed to the OFE.

Jim-
That's about all I've heard on these forums...definitely the first place to go, and I will

Ryan-
That is _exactly_ what I am looking for. You can expect a call from me in the near future.

Unfortunately I need my truck back, probably not for a few weeks still. I will keep reading up (gotten plenty of use out of that search button at the bottom) and I will return with more questions, I promise!

Ryan bring on the questions, a few months back I was in your shoes, wanting to find out where my hard earned dollars would do the most good. I've been reading this forum since 2002 and it has been amazing watching the progression of knowledge passed along from the guys that have been there, done that, to all of us who are still learning...Good people here.
