Nippondenso starter install instructions?

Quick question for anyone who might have one of these in their truck!
I installed one yesterday, but haven't tried it yet, as I have a question regarding the wiring.
There is the main red terminal, on both the stocker and Nippondenso starter, but on our stock starter a small single wire also goes to the solenoid.
On the Nippondenso there is no other place that I could see where this wire would attach...but there IS a terminal which to me looked like it goes to the starter body?

With this wire being red in color, it doesn't seem as though it "should" go to the starter body, so I thought I'd ask here, and hopefully get answers from those that have a Nippondenso installed, or an idea of the correct wiring setup!
As far as I could tell, where I connected this small red wire seemed like the logical place for it to go...but some confirmation would be helpful.

Thanks..

Dale

Re: Nippondenso starter install instructions?

Gosh, nobody upgrading their starters yet...I guess that's good news really, showing they do last! The Nippendenso apparently turns the engine over faster, PLUS it's one hefty starter, being much larger than the stock unit.

Re: Nippondenso starter install instructions?

Dale...did you answer your own question? I haven't upgraded my starter yet but I would think they both hook up pretty much the same. That is the big red wire goes to the starter motor and the little red wire goes to the starter solenoid...right? I have heard one of the terminals needs to be opened up a little more to fit but other than the two bolts vice the three bolt mounting they are a swap out. Just my two cents.

Re: Nippondenso starter install instructions?

Griz...your somewhat right, as the starter bolts up the same, it's just this single wire (apparently coming from the fender solenoid) and how it hooks to the starter that is different.
The stock starter has a terminal not far from where the main cable hooks to the starter, but on the Nippendenso, there is a "tab" in which it seems that this wire hooks to.

My only issue was whether this is the correct place to hook it to, as my single wire is red in color (meaning it being a hot wire) and it seems that this "tab" is on the casing of the starter, which would be grounded obviously...so it just didn't seem right! BUT, if that's how it works (and I hope it does) that's how I have it hooked up!

Maybe...somehow this "tab" is hooked into the solenoid some how, which will make all my questioning irrelevant, but I've had no confirmation yet that this is how it is!

Re: Nippondenso starter install instructions?

Okay Dale I now understand your problem. The old starters have a small red wire coming from the starter relay to the solenoid. And a big red wire from the hot side of the battery to the motor. I guess you'll have to wait for someone who has hooked one of these new starters up to step in or call the people you bought it from and ask where the small red wire from the relay hooks up to on your new starter. Re: Nippondenso starter install instructions?

Dale:
Mine had a small screw terminal on the solenoid that I attached the smaller red wire to and a larger spot obviously meant for the lug on the larger cable. Go ahead and fire her up! You will LOVE this starter.

Re: Nippondenso starter install instructions?

Hey Dale,

How did you make out???

I just replaced my SD Bosche on warrenty (new in Nov 2006).... with another one......the first one wouldn't shut off after I started the truck...even on turning off the key. LOL was kind of exciting 'till I figured out it was the starter which by the way would shut off and disengage after 15-20 seconds....

Will be looking to the Nippondenso if/when this next one fails...

Re: Nippondenso starter install instructions?

Worked out just fine Cary. It seems that I put the wires in the correct place, as it turns over real well.
I seem to have one battery that doesn't want to finish a complete charge...so something is going on there, and I'll look into it further when I get some time off.

Thanks for your help!

Dale
