Re: OD LIGHT FLASHING!!! HELP!!

Nobody can make any useful suggestion unless we know what code was stored in the computer's memory when the light flashed.

Auto parts stores can read generic codes, but not Ford trans codes. That takes a Ford specific code reader.

Re: OD LIGHT FLASHING!!! HELP!!

My overdrive light started flashing a few hundred miles ago.The trans fluid was pretty red with no smell. I first noticed it when it shifted into overdrive the truck would surge,I could watch the tach bounce back and forth between 1800-2000 rpm's. So I took it to a buddy of mine who works at Ford and he plugged it in and told me it was a transmission slipping code. He cleared it ,I drove a few days and it started blinking again. I put some trans fix from an auto parts store down the neck and it didn't blink anymore. When I pull a trailer it blinks again ,once trailer is unhooked and normal driving ensues it stops blinking on its own. Took it to trans shop and the guy plugged it in to his reader and told me it was torque converter slippage. The truck has a 190,000 miles on it so I told him to pull it and rebuild it (with uprades,tc,shiftkit, etc) since its got to come out anyway for the tc to be replaced. My rebuild is gonna run me about $1900.00 give or take but since I am NO mechanic and plan on keeping this truck for a while I opted to have it pulled and rebuilt. I would love to have a BTS tranny but can't go that route yet. My advice is talk to people you know and find a reputable builder who has knowledge of the E4OD and upgrades.

**UPDATE** OD LIGHT FLASHING!!! HELP!!

got the codes pulled....one was the converter clutch slip and the other was turbo charger boost sensor (i know thats not a trans code) so ive called around today and everyone is saying about 2k...one of the tranny shops said about 2100 so i called a different guy and he said....complete R&R and Flush, a 40 element sprag, converter, transco shift kit, shift sylinoid, clutches, seals and bands and replacing all the electronics on the trans on the high side he said $2000 installed he said ill be looking about $800 to $1100 bucks for parts....is this a decent deal or no? seems like it wouldnt be too bad...it would be even better if I had the money to fix it..

Also...what years has/had the e4OD trans that would bolt into my 97 2wd PSD? incase I have to find a junk yard trans out of a crashed truck or something for short term to save money and have my original trans re-done?

Re: **UPDATE** OD LIGHT FLASHING!!! HELP!!

Before throwing a ton of coins at it I would get the tranny serviced, DO NOT take it to some shop that uses the flushing machine!! Drain the fluid and don't forget the torque converter and change the filter.

Just because the ATF is not burnt or smelling bad does not mean that it is doing what it is supposed to. Also the filter could be clogged enough to limit the flow and that's why you're getting the TC slip code.

Mine did this at 115k miles and all it needed was a service.

Just my .02 worth

Thanks John
The last guy I spoke with said the exact same thing....he said it may fix it if I catch it soon enough...he said to drive it around 100+ miles or so and it may fix it and could get another 30k out of it given everything is still ok. Thanks for the insight!
