Re: OLD STYLE HPOP MOD ?

Welcome to the forum!

Modifying the HPOP would not be one of the DIY variety mods (it would be easier to swap in a later-model pump). For fuel regulator shimming, it will give you a bit quicker throttle response, but nothing earth-shattering. You can use a BB between the regualator spool piece and spring or you can get the "California Kit" from Ford that will do essentially the same thing (Ford part F6TZ-9K061-AA). Cheers!

if i swap to a later model super duty hpop will i have problems with oil drainback in hpop resivoir? my engine is a 95 psd in an F350.

how much pressure does the hpop normally build @ WOT?

how much is too much?

also on the fuel pressure reg, i checked my pressure last night,it reads 65psi. is this normal? sufficient? if so will increasing FP above 65psi increase throttle response or fuel delivery?

sorry if i ask too many questions.

Re: OLD STYLE HPOP MOD ?

Stock injectors can only put out so much fuel, no matter where you put your fuel pressure, albeit at 65 PSI you are close to being right on anyway.

I have the '95 PSD and run an '01 HPOP, and yes, there would be a drainback issue, but if you look in my sig, I've added an oil accumulator tank which takes care of the issue.

As for how many PSI of pressure for the HPOP...it depends on the pump! I believe the idea, is to see a steady 3000 PSI (constant) which isn't available with the stock HPOP's as far as I know? There are aftermarket HPOP's out now that can hold that and increase it, but "cost" is the main "Con" to adding one, and isn't necessarily going to help a set of stock injectors enough to pay for itself in my opinion. If your looking for larger power increases, there are other modifications worthy of looking at for less $$ than the aftermarket HPOP's.
In most cases the Superduty type HPOP's with a 17° swash plate design would give you a higher oil output for your stock injectors (if that's only what you are looking for).

Aftermarket injectors & programming, along with other supporting modifications would give you the most power for the dollars spent! The folks here can give you a whole host of information with regard to "the best bang for the buck" with regard to Powerstroke power add-ons.

There also is a SWAMP Performance 20° swash plate designed HPOP available for those wishing for a greater increase in pressure holding oil.

Personally, I found doing the IDM (injector drive module) modification, gave me a much better throttle response, and then adding programming to that made it even better.
Some say my throttle response is too great (truck wants to jump too soon) for every day driving, but that of course depends on what setting my chip is at.

As for questions...there is no such thing here as "too many questions", so fire away, read the responses, and make up your own mind as to what is valid for your own purposes.

Best of luck with your mods, and welcome to the site!

(Any info here that others disagree with, please say so, so the new members have a better reflection on making their decisions).

Re: OLD STYLE HPOP MOD ?

IDM Mod? I'm green so help me here. Does this modify the injector drive voltage or does this have something to do with timing?

YES on both counts, it increases the voltage that the IDM puts out, which opens the injectors a bit sooner which has the same effect as advancing the timing and making the pulse width a little wider.

Ok I am intrested. Is this a DIY mod? If so does anyone know how it is done?

yes, Radio Shack will not have what you need. You need to get the specialized stuff at http://www.digikey.com.
