You need to get ahold of TWildman and talk to him about a custom chip. The one he burned for me holds the shift into OD to 46 MPH instead of the 32 that it use to be.

Jon mentioned him too about the TSB for harsh shifts on 96-97 250-350,,,, said he could reflash my PCM or the dealer could do it too he said,, anyway there was an issue with them,,,, mine used to always shift like a mule from 2-3 and it did it twice yesterday.
about 1000 miles on the new tranny and all is well, drug an 84 F-250 diesel 4x4 home on a dolly 400 miles last night and did great.
Temps never got over 148* coming out of the tranny (before coolers) on the highway. It was about 22* outside then.

Grant, you're talking about holding the 3-4 upshift to a higher speed, I think. Lee, you're hoping for 4th/OD to stay engaged at a lower speed w/o it downshifting to 3rd (1:1), correct? Mine does it too; it kicks down to 3rd if I have my 4-5000# tool trailer attached at just under 70mph, where it howls at 3000+rpm, over the top of the hill or overpass, and then takes its gay old time upshifting back to 4th... This is annoying. I'd rather have it work harder at 2100rpm than scream at 3000 (isn't there more torque at 2100 than 3000 anyhow, or are talking the old hp vs tq dilemma?) Any comments / suggestions?

pisses me off when it does that,,, feel like I just shot 1/2 gallon of fuel out the pipe every time.
I think it has more to do with the cruise control loosing MPH and doing what it has to, to make it up. I was watching the speedo needle and once it drops more than a needle width VVRROOOOMMMMM there goes the tach and that 1/2 gallon of $2 fuel.
I just thought there might be a way to block that signal to the tranny or at least re-set it so it would allow more MPH drop

if you think tha tyou can lug it down and torque up the hill at 2100 , your nuts it can not pull it, you need to have over 2500 to pull well, what you need is more power or something inbetween, it ain't an IDI , it's a PSD.

Mine does this running empty pulling nothing at all.
Granted the truck weighs 7500# with nobody in it so I am 8000#+ with passengers,,,,,, if the cruise would allow a 2-3 mph drop I would never down shift.

My truck has the 3:55 gears and this may be an issue as my tires are about 8-9% taller than stock 32" vs 33.5".
But I run 70 MPH + at just under 2000 RPM add 8-9% to that speed for the tire offset,,,, so I guess I'm running around 80 MPH @ 1900 or so RPM.
I have wondered if these gears are actually hurting my mileage,,, do 3:73's do better on economy????? I know they will require higher RPMs but is that a "sweet spot" for economy????? Am I alredy lugging it???

Running up the Dekalb IL Tuesday fighting some awesome winds all the way (400 miles), 29* and running winter fuel I averaged 11-12 and that sucked!
Coming back no wind, dragging an 84 250 4x4 diesel on a dolly, 22* I averaged the same.
Usualy I get about 14.5 miles and have gotten 15.5 once over the 2 tanks,,,,, I hear all these 18-20 miles but I personaly don't know anyone getting that.
My dad gets 16.5 out of his 02 club cab (not crew) long bed 4x4 250 and I believe him.
My friend has the same truck as my dad in an 00 and gets 14-15 and I know his is correct.
Sometimes I wonder if these high mpg's are from not knowing the correct math or just estimated.
My 98 Beetle turbo diesel (TDI) gets 42 regular and has gotten 46,,,, NOW THOSE ARE SOME NUMBERS TO SMILE ON and I think they can be improved.

OH on that trip I ran about 9 mph over posted so about half the trip was 64 MPH and the other was 74 MPH on the speedo,,,, so I was doing as I said about 8-9% more actual due to my tires being taller.
