Your brake issue sounds like a vacuum issue. First check all vacuum lines. Then the pump. The pump is relatively easy to change and not too expensive.
If you need a new tranny, seriously consider BTS. There are other good trannies out there but it will be hard to beat BTS.
Look at what I have done with my 97 in my signature. I can assure you it will blow my son's late 04 Ram off the road.
