As you can see from my signature. My engine is bone stock with the exception of the airbox recall or upgrade. I am getting ready to order from Dale, a three pod pillar with autometer gauges. I am not towing anything now and I would like to get some opinions on what gauges you would recommend with the main purpose being engine protection. I have heard on this forum that the stock water and oil gauges are pretty worthless. That being said, would you install a pyro gauge, water temp and oil pressure or would you forget either the oil or water and install a boost gauge. Probably shouldn't be too concerned about boost since the engine is stock and I probably won't ever chip it but I though maybe the boost gauge would help me monitor holes in the downpipe or turbo boot but watching for boost changes out of the norm. Thanks for any opinions, I am just looking to mainly protect the engine and get some advance notice if anything is going wrong or my egts are too high and the engine needs to be idled down prior to shut off.

The boost gauge is just for prettiness. A pyro is always a great idea, as the temps tend to go up with boost loss. The water temp gauge def wouldnt hurt. As it and the oil temp gauge are just on/off gauges for the most part. I am not sure i would get oil pressure, if your motor loses oil pressure it will stop running all together. Oil drives the injectors. An oil temp gauge wouldnt hurt, and you could run multiple senders(tranny/axles) and put it on a switch.

Sorry to hijack Robert, Dusten a little more info on how to set up multiple temps on one gauge with a switch, it sounds interesting.
Robert if your not planning on injectors but maybe a chip in the future, id say pyro, tranny temp, and oil pressure prob be good, Id like to have an oil pressure gauge myself.

Basically, all temp gauges are the same. You install the sending unit in what you want the temp monitored. Say your oil pan, rear diff and transmission. You then wire each sender into a switch with as many positions as you have senders. You then send the output of the switch to the gauge. Flip the switch and the gauge will read the sender you have selected. If you do a search several members on here have done it. As i stated earlier, an oil pressure gauge isnt really needed on these trucks though. I would worry more about my temps than the pressure.
