Power loss with intercooler?

Is it possible to lose power when you have an intercooler installed.I installed a 6.0 cooler a few weeks ago and just recently to my chip out to have some work done, and I could not beleive the lack of power on the bottom end.I swear I could get beat by an Ford escort.I popped the hood and checked for cracked or broken hoses and such and there was none.I have about 15 pounds of boost without the chip so I guess all is normal.Just didnt think it would rob that much on the lower end. Re: Power loss with intercooler?

of course, you have to pressurize all that more volume in teh cooler and pipes etc. , lose power no, slower spool up, hell yes.

Re: Power loss with intercooler?

I was talking to one of the vendors about what I want to do to my truck. He said he would need to reburn the chip after I got my IC. Call the company that burned your chip to see what they can change.

Re: Power loss with intercooler?

get some larger injectors and then call Wildman, I can get boost up in millisecs way past 1 psi per 100 rpm too, it can run 30# at just over 2000 rpm.

Re: Power loss with intercooler?

Your suffering turbo lag. That tiny turbo is not built for the long distance of piping and IC(about 9 ft further then stock). Air volume is your problem. That is the main reason I switched to a BB turbo.
Boost loss is expected, about 4lbs. If you have NO loss, your not cooling the air charge.
I was at 29lbs with my stock injectors(.84 exhaust housing). Intercooled it, and dropped to 25lbs. And now, well I'm moded a little since then.

Re: Power loss with intercooler?

Like Nit says injectors!

I have found that Dale (Powerstroke2000) is correct too, that the right chip will fuel quicker and make up for the lag...

My injectors aren't near as large as Nit's but lag is definitely not an issue with my current setup!

Good luck to all of you doing these i/c installs now!!!

God Bless,

TC

Re: Power loss with intercooler?

Agreed your problem is the added volume. You can fight this a couple ways. The chip programming will make a huge difference. You can also install a smaller exhaust housing. How small you go depends on your injectors. Stock=.84, 150-160cc=1.0, anything bigger stick with the stock 1.15. May need to shift one way or the other slgihtly depending on driveing habbits. The injectors will also make a big difference.
