I have no experience with chips. I have always used a programmer. My question is can I pull the chip and run the truck without it or does it need a stock chip put back in to run? I think the chip is bad. I bought the truck and the previous owner said it had a chip of some kind in it. He did not know what type.

Yes. Remove the three nuts that hold the e-brake chassis. Slide the chassis off of the studs. You will then see the back of the pcm. If done right, it will have a piece of tape holding the chip tight to its seat.
