Why is this? Does the driveshaft need to be balanced after replacing the u-joints?

Thanks.

Aloha Folks-
So, as many of you know the dana 60 I have came from a dually. Is it correct to assume that the stub axles in this dana 60 are longer and that I need to get different ones, shorter ones because I have a single wheel setup? If so, what part number are these stub axles? same part number for both sides?

Mahalo!

The DRW stub axles are fine. No need to get new ones.

Aloha Rusty-
thank you for this info on the stub axles. I was wondering because the DRW has what looks like a spacer attached to the disk brake area, something that our SRW's do not have but if the lengths are the same, that is great!

Mahalo,
kyle

The spacers are there to space out the Dually wheels out properly. Your Dana 50 hubs will space everything out properly for your SRW setup. The Dana 60 ends up being a hair wider than your Dana 50.

Where are the pics?....lol

The double cardan end is very tricky to disassemble and assemble with the new ujoints. They can be very frustrating if you don't know the correct procedure. You also need to be careful if greasable ujoints are used that the grease fittings are in compression.

Aloha Rusty-
I hope to get some pics up soon in regard to my prep work. CaryT was good to inform me how much these axles weigh! I say this because the d60 is still in the back of my truck! I have a camper shell on too. So, I am hoping to get the right hub socket so that I can take off everything down to the knuckles. This should shed some of the weight and allow me to take out the inside axle setup so I can have new u-joints installed.

I am hoping my friend and boss will let me use an apparatus like a cherry picker to get the d60 out of my truck and onto jack stands or something so I can clean it and work on it. Hope to have some photos soon.

Mahalo,
kyle
ps: now if I could just locate one of those cv yokes for the drive shaft!

Make sure that the yoke you get fits your T-case before you spend a bunch of money buying or rebuilding the F350 front driveshaft.... I was under the impression that they would all fit when I did the D60 in my F250, and after I got the 1 ton shaft rebuilt, I found out this wasn't the case. On a 97 apparently the splines on the front output of the T-case are different than previous years. This may also be the case for 96 also. After doing a bunch of research with no luck I ended up just using the 3/4 ton driveshaft which works ok, just not at high speeds. Somebody around here knows more about this than me (probably Cary T as usual)..... I just can't remember who it was.

Cheers!

Do you have to replace the dust covers or heat shields that go over the rotor? I am talking about the thin metal half circle that is up against the knuckle. I am having a hard time finding these things and the ones that came with my D60 are old and rusted out. Did ya'll leave these things out, is that ok - I wasn't sure if they are needed?

Thanks.

No they are needed or no to not leave them out? I found some at Bronco Graveyard but they run $80ea. - just for dust covers? That is the only place I have found them. All yards around here have some that are in bad shape.

Nope pulled mine off both trucks.....I have found on occasion rocks get caught between the rotor and dust guard and make for a hell of a racket...backing up usually cleans em out...but I tossed anyways....besides they look girlie manish.....

I got new ones from Powerstrokeshop.com but that was 3 years ago, seemed like $40 ea or so. Did Ford tell you they are obsolete?
