Rear SD "F" codes done w/ pics

Well I finally got around to posting some pics of the rear Super Duty "F" code rear springs.

I bought all new springs, bolts and OBS shackle. The shackle needed to be replaced due to the rust.

The "F" code spring is a progressive type spring. More info is available in the Excursion section. The swap is almost a total bolt in, except for the following:

-The front leaf mount hole needs to be enlarged. The SD springs have larger bolts.
-The shackle hole that attaches to the spring also needs to be enlarged.
-The second leaf down needs to be trimmed approximately 2" because it hits the shackle.
-Sway bar links might have to be extended. I have an aftermarket sway bar and the links that came with the kit were to short to begin with.

That were the only things that were needed to be done.

You might be able to use a SD shackle but it will need some grinding to fit the frame mount and thehole will need to be enlarged on the rear frame mount.

It's a toss up on which shackle that could be used.

The shocks are Bilstein 5125.

I like the truck to have some rake to it. The factory F350 block measured 3.5" and it was too low. I stacked a 1" block and it looked good. I did not like the stacked block idea so I ordered a 5" Icon block. I could not find a 4.5" so the 5" one had to do.

I opted to put my overload springs back in. The overload spring is approximately 1" away from the front frame hanger. I'm 50-50 about re-arching the overload spring....any opinons?

With the SD springs all around, the ride is 200% better. If anyone is located around my area, come for a ride. A bit of caution, you will not want to get out. It's nice to have a truck that the suspension actually works/flexs/moves.

I did not tow with the truck yet.

A big thanks to CaryT

so basically all you had to do was drill out the holes a bit and bolt them up???? Seems simple enough, how about the front?

Basically some minor drilling and trimming.

What about the front?

My friend is the service service/parts manager at DiFeo Ford (advertiser here) and I get my parts at dealer cost.

Plug the part numbers in at Ford Parts and Ford Diesel Parts at Powerstroke Shop and you'll get the approximate cost.

Great job Billy,

I wonder why I didnt have to trim the second leaf, just the bottom thick leaf because it was hitting the exhaust. Good job

Billy,

Looks good! I thought that top leaf on the pack was called the auxiliary spring and the Fs didn't need them? Did that leaf come new with yours or did you take it off the old springs? Nice job on the fronts too! Let's see some profile shots now.

Frank,

I don't think you have Fs. I've read your posts and I think you probably have Cs or maybe Bs. I'm pretty sure Fs first came out in model year 2005.

I think Frank used the Super Duty shackles in his. He posted something about grinding the shackle.

The top leaf is the main leaf.

I re-used the OBS auxillary spring that came on my truck. Some SD trucks came with the auxillary springs but they are too long.

Gotcha, I need to get the number off the spring again so I can figure out what I have and Billy was right I used the S\D shackles because my obs shackles were shot and the S\D shackles are made with thicker material which I had to grind down to fit in the rear frame mount. I decided to remove my obs overloads when I installed my air bags. They did not touch the stops when I had a 17k boat on the trailer with way to much tongue weight.

Finally got around to washing the truck this weekend. Here is a side profile shot. Tires are Coopers ATRs 265/75-16. Long story short about the tires. One week before doing the RSK, I was towing my car from NJ to KY for a race in Bowling Green. I had 50K on my tires and they needed replacement. I was holding off until doing the RSK. Well....I was on Rt 65, 10 miles before my exit for Bowling Green and the truck starts to vibration. Drove it to the hotel parking lot and noticed a huge bump in the middle of the left rear tire (ply seperation). My choice was either throw the spare on and drive back with no spare or buy new tires. My choice was buy new tires.
