Rear Springs opinion

When I first got my truck, I had approximately 4"-5" between the overload spring and its perch. As of today, it is touching. I went to the leaf spring shop and the guy told me this:

You have 2 choices.

First choice-There is a spring pack that has 5 leafs (thinner) instead of the stock 4 (thicker). $90 per sided. The 5 leaf pack is more common that the reason for the cheap price.

Second choice- Exact stock replacement will cost $195 per side. The stock replacement ones are not that popular and he has to build them vs. the 5 leaf ones that come pre-build from the factory.

He has both in stock but would rather sell me the 5 leafs ones vs taking my money.

I asked about ride quality and height. He said that it should ride the same due to the thinner leafs. He then stated that he has no problem taking my money.

I am leaning towards the 5 leaf pack. I would be re-using the overload spring.

Thanks

Billy T.

Re: Rear Springs opinion

from my expierence, generally a pack of springs with more leaves that are thinner ride better, as they springs are more progressive, i would go with the 5 pack.

Re: Rear Springs opinion

Stop... Get some SD rear takeoffs, free sometimes from a 4x4 shop. Much better ride and easy to install. All you need to do is drill out shackel for the larger bolts. You acn eather use your stock overload or use the SD .

Will the SD rear takeoffs raise the rear end any?

Re: Rear Springs opinion

just back to normal height, all Ford rear springs for SD models anyways are teh same, somethign like 79-03 teh size is the same , so take offs would work very well, I bought a set of nice 4-5 thin leaf ones and tehy rode great, nice and soft and bouncy, and bouncy, and I hate them now. Take-offs would be best

Re: Rear Springs opinion

But how do you know how much wear and tear the SD springs have? One is installing a used spring. If I see the SD go from the dealer lot into the spring shop, then I won't have a problem.

The spring shop guy might want to make a quick buck and lie about the condition of springs. Then you go back to him and tell him that the truck is sagging. Then he says you bought a used spring.

I bought the 5 leaf ones, just like the SD has. $90 per side.

Re: Rear Springs opinion

I just purchased a pair of Ford 5560 replacemant rear spring's for my F-350 and they have 5 leafs instead of my stock 4. All appear to be the same thickness. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these as too ride height and ride quality. They would be on already except the old bolt's are frozen to the shackle bushing. After I get new bolt's I will burn the ols ones off. Just wanna know what I can expect.
