recommended mods

Truck is a 97 250 super duty, 160,000 miles and the only mod is a banks air filter, truck is newly bought and has just gotten a clean bill of health. I will do two coast to coast trips per year and an ocassional tow with a 3,500 pound trailer.
I would like to start doing minor, basic mods. Looking to improve mileage is high on the list.
I have been reading about chips and there is a dizzing array with reviews from ok to horrible, very few people seem very happy with their chips. The first thing I want to do is open up the exaust and if members have suggestions I would love to hear them and then whatever else to do as a basic mod. At the moment I can comfortably spend 3k.
Whatever I do I'd like to keep or improve reliability.
Thank you all as you've eased my transition into diesel.

I'd like to ad the truck is 2 wheel drive, extended cab and short bed.

You have a Bank air filter or air intake?

I'd start with intake, downpipe and exhaust. Honestly, the first thing I would do is call Dale Isley at Tymar Performance, he is upstanding guy and has no need to sell you crap you don't need.

Not real sure what the difference is. The system has a opening for air bolted to the header in front of the radiator, a place for the filter and a little bowl that has a ford emblem on it, looks like a fuel filter.
I think I will start with exhaust, Tymar doesn't have much of a website but from reading the forum people seem to like him. I will give him a call. Thanks

that little bowl that sais ford on it is the factory air filter gauge that most aftermarket intakes incorporate into their new filter, but if you are looking for mileage and reliability, (like most of are on here), go with the best stuff and you wont be disappointed.
if i were in your shoes i would start with a "tymar" intake which dale isle can hook you up with, along with a 3 inch down pipe and other exauhst parts depending on how loud/free flowing you want to go,
When looking for a chip you really cant get good stuff for these trucks from the big name brands, if you want a good chip you have to go to the smaller guys who dedicate alot of time into these trucks, i use a tony wildman chip along with many other on here and couldnt be more satisfied. its a 6 position chip you can change with a knob thats included, and there is economy mode that some of us get that gets pretty decent milage considering the size of the truck and the brute size of the motor. Tony wildmans just one of a few, but i found the most positive stuff on him so i went with it.
For reliability, if your going to be driving cross country i would keep a new (cps) or cam position sensor handy, they go and they go without warning and will leave you stranded, but if you have the correct socket and wrench you can change it on the side of the road. they cost about twenty bucks from ford. Along with that i would keep a spare fuel filter stashed away in case you encounter some sub-par fuel on your journeys
As far as more power goes the opportunities are endless depending on how wide you want to open your wallet,

Now is this truck a standard or automatic, that can open or close some doors for you.

The first & best mods I did to my F350 was a single-mass flywheel (w/new clutch), and lockers.

I'd still have put in a locker if it was 2wd. (My Dodge wants one too now )

Wow, thanks, lots of good info and I will be calling Dale and get hooked up with opening up the exhaust a little. Going to wait on a chip until after I get the exhaust work done. As this will be my only vehicle I don't want to go radical. Always carry a extra fuel filter with me as this has stopped me on gas cars a fewtimes in Mexico, bad fuel.
Going for a pre purchase inspection on Monday at Strictly Diesels of Scottsdale, az and a primer of what's what under the hood.
The truck has been maintained with an open wallet, lots of new and rebuilt parts, every rubber on the truck looks absolutely brand new and under the hood is super clean and has not been cleaned.
Had a neighbor, a Ford diesel guy look over the truck and go over a couple of things with me and he thinks I got an amazing buy.
Truck is automatic, rebuilt 23,000 miles age and trans oil changed 3000 mile ago.
Thanks again

Stang, thanks for the site I have already read most of BAZ'S stuff and he has a great deal of info. I previously inquired about longer oil change times and people on this board say it's not realistic.
Got a number for Dale? Is he at Total Diesel 817 932 5078????

I'm an old man now but as a youngster I found I did many modifications twice and three times, now I have a little more brain power and ask lots of questions before I start. Sort of measure twice, cut once.

Dale's number is 509-922-8785 if you get his recording just leave a message and he'll get back to you.

As far as your exhaust and since you are possibly in a county in Arizona that does inspections you will need to keep your cat, so just let him know.

Bugman, thanks again for the info. I'm one block into Yavapai county and there is no emission inspection here. Finally got around to adding photos of my truck.

Also, looking at your pics, get rid that orange boot between the intake and the turbo for an upgraded one, they are know to crack and dust your turbo. .
