Re: refinish stock wheels??

If the old rims have a clearcoat on them, go to napa and
get a can of their paint stripper and remove the clearcoat.
After u get the clearcoat off take some good alum polish
and start rubbing. I used http://www.englishcustompolishing.com/index.html
I had some old american racing rims that were in pretty bad
shape and was able to get them looking pretty nice.
Took about a day per rim.
The web page has some good advice on how to do the restoration as well. Hope this helps!!!!!!!!

Re: refinish stock wheels??

I have heard the factory rims are less like a clearcoat and more like a plastic coating? ANybody confirm or deny that? I would love to refinish my wheels as well.

Re: refinish stock wheels??

The local powder coat shop does wheels for about $35 ea. You can pick the color you want, and it will last for a long time.

Re: refinish stock wheels??

my coating was almost gone. We have a Aluminum wheel cleaner in the detail shop. It shines them up in no time flat.

You'd recognize the smell and the sting. It's a Hydrochloric Acid dilution.

spray it on, let sit until you can grab the pressure washer and blast it off.

Re: refinish stock wheels??

The coating on mine is no where near gone, but just bubbled in places. For the record mine are the dished style wheels, they have more of a gray'ish tent to them verses the flat version that is more polished looking.

Re: refinish stock wheels??

The clear coating is a clear powder coating. That is why it has the plastic look. You can remove it with a good SOLVENT based paint stripper or one of my buddies used a can of GASKET Remover from NAPA. After that he cleaned them with a acid aluminum cleaner and then buffed and polished them up. Looked like mirrors. The only problem is with out the clear coating, they will loose there shine fairly quick.

Re: refinish stock wheels??

Do a google search for wheel reconditioning, or contact your local bodyshop. In CA WheelsAmerica does it for like $120/wheel. Might be cheaper if all you want is refinish.
