Power Strokes 1994-1997 Upgrades and AftermarketUpgrading or adding OEM or aftermarket equipment to your 1994-1997 Ford F-Series with Power Stroke engine.
What are the pros and cons of removing the ebps? Does it restrict or not? If it will improve power or performance. Always looking to improve as I can. Thanks for all the info, I've learned a lot from all yall.
Are you talking about removing the Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor (EBPS) or gutting/removing the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve (EBPV)? In the case of the valve, the butterfly and shaft take up 22% of the flow area (so it will flow better resulting in roughly a 50F drop in EGTs). Cheers!
There are other mods I want to do... but after rebuilding the front axle... a little low on money for a while. Also any other free or inexpensive mods?
When I gutted my egbp I saw no improvement in any power or lower egt's and only found a soft engine code latter. I now found you can convert your egbp into a jake break. Good luck Mont
For those of us who tow, the do-it-yourself exhaust brake is a great tool.
To activate the brake will cost perhaps $10 for a switch. If you have an automatic transmission, another $10 switch will allow you to lock-up the torque converter for when coming down the mountain with the exhaust brake working.
Not bad, considering an after-market exhaust brake would cost perhaps a thousand buckaroos to install.

I'm with Mr. Patrick on this. I use my modified exhaust valve "brake" all the time. It was about $20, which included a nifty pack of indicator lights! NOTE: My '94.5 has the "fade-y" brake pedal business, so wiring the "exhaust brake" to trip either manually or by the brake lights was a waste- the brakes fade so its tough to get the engine brake to trip just off the pedal. 1 more thing to fix, someday...!
