replace or rebuild trans

hello, tranny is doing some funny stuff, almost like the kickdown is not working right. if im towing it wont hold gear steady it will shift up then down over and over, before i replace it does anyone have any ideas on what can cause this? i get no flashing od light or CEL and the tranny dont seem to slip when it does hold gear. If i decide to replace it should i rebuild it or go and get a rebuild from ford, this tranny has been rebuilt about 3 years ago and i always change the fluid and filter on time.

I assume this is an automatic...are you towing in OD? If so...try shutting off the OD off and see what happens. It almost sounds like it is shifting in and out of OD. Just a thought...

As far as rebuild or exchange...I have to side with the rest here. Do it right if you plan to hold onto your truck for a long time...have it rebuilt by a quality re-builder...Brian or John Woods. I am sure there are others but those two are the most often mentioned here.

Sounds like bad tuning. I had similar issues with my old 95 after Ford flashed the PCM. On my 97 with a BullyDog chip. Neither had transmission problems at the time. Its an issue of throttle depression and shift point curve. That can be tricky and if your truck isn't putting out the power expected with the chip tuning it will really foul up the shifting in OD. I custom tuned my chips shift curves to get it all right for my truck and my tastes. No more up down shifting issues and I love it.

tried it out of OD and same result, i did have ford reflash the pcm, also sent the edge in for an update, can i talk to edge about the tunes in the edge? i live about five minutes from them. I dont have alot of money need to get the trans done and the front fixed from cracks on the front where the hood latch is. (anyone else have the cracks on the front?) figure ill spend for the better trans this time, sent an email to brian and am waiting to hear back from him.
