How do I know if a SD turbo is a ball-bearing model? Is there a certain year or physical attribute to look for? I also see both wastegated and non-wastegated models, what is up with that. Thanks
To the best of my knowledge all "superduty" turbos are wastegated unless it's aftermarket. And none ever came with a BB bearing section. If you want a BB turbo, you'll have to buy one yourself because they never came stock on any powerstroke.
Somewhere on this site I recall seeing a SD style (round exhaust inlet) turbo from an econoline van that did not have a wastegate. Seems like the wastegate would be more desirable, though. I assume that a pedistal and an exhaust y with the up-pipes would be needed to put this on an obs. I chipped a late '99 SD for my uncle and his otherwise stock truck will almost outrun mine. I realize it has bigger injectors and turbo. So what is the advantage of the BB center section?
If it is a stock superduty turbo don't bother with the swap( don't ask how i know). If it is a bb turbo then that is a different story. I did it on my old truck and that was a giant waste of time, should have installed a bb or a h2e .
