Sonix valve shifts too hard.

put a Sonix valve and Tri springs from Tymar in my buddies truck about a year ago and he is sick of the hard shifts, and I mean hard, full throttle will almost break the seat back, pulling the 6 place sled trailer we thought we were gunna snap something.

Is there any way to soften the shifts slightly, it doesn't seem to matter if the chip is in the truck or not there still hard shifts.

Re: Sonix valve shifts too hard.

I've allways been told that if it shifts hard then there's less clutches slipping so reduced wear in the transmission. I wish my truck would shift that hard! But I think also that it could be a bad thing to an extent. I would say that you could put a softer spring in to soften it up.

Give Jon (Richter69) a PM. He has played with enought of those units to quote chapter and verse on what it takes to make it shift the way you want.

Re: Sonix valve shifts too hard.

So you are saying that it has shifted that way since you put the kit in, were there any springs already in there of similar size to what you put in? I have heard that on some trucks you remove some springs when you put the tricums in?

I wish mine shifted that hard..........

Re: Sonix valve shifts too hard.

it should shift fast, not so much as hard, sounds liek it is too hard for any good, bet a spring was missed or not removed, better go over it again.

Re: Sonix valve shifts too hard.

there was soemthing in the instructions about certain '97 models having one spring and some have two , this one had one spring so we just replaced the springs like so.

its like this in all gears, and I know we didnt miss a spring.

light to normal throttle is fine, he is kinda wussified and doesn't like the hard shift all that much, but full throttle is just too much.

Re: Sonix valve shifts too hard.

put the stock .372 line mod valve back in, or take the tri springs out and leave the sonnax valve. Which size valve did you use? it should have been a .427, if it was the .500 put the stocker in. Honestly those springs are too damn stiff, if the stock ones alone are too soft get a transgo hd2 kit and use the springs from it alone with the plate provided and start on the small side with the holes and enlarge them if its too soft. You will need to pull the line mod out anyway to drill 2 small exhaust holes in the casting. Or one could get another vb done

Re: Sonix valve shifts too hard.

it was the .427 valve, I believe that is what comes in the Tymar kit. I have never seen a Tymar Kit say to drill the exhaust hole. I put one in a buddies truck from Bully dog and there's said to drill two exhaust holes, so we did and his truck never shifted right after that, it eventualy grenaded.

I'll see if we still have the stock valve and try that, thanks

Re: Sonix valve shifts too hard.

the hole drilling is for the transgo stuff only. If its got the .427 the smaller valve will be a minimal effort, you might remove the tri springs but then it may be too soft, you could cut the tri springs down, say in half.

Re: Sonix valve shifts too hard.

I had thought about shortening the springs too, you think that will be the best bet to shorten the springs??
