i live in philadelphia and have been thinking about putting stacks on. i have a friend that is telling me that stacks are illegal, according to a friend of his brother's who got a warning from a city cop for driving in the city with stacks on his truck. has anyone heard of something like this or ran into this kind of problem or have any ideas? and specifically in philadelphia?
According to my friend's brother's aunt, she has a cousing that knew an omish meat cutter that said they weren't.
I dont' see what the difference between stacks and doing dual tail pipes, except for one is in the air and larger in diameter and the other one is closer to the ground. As long as you keep the proper emissions equipment on it that the law requires you should be ok.

Don't see how they can say a pick up cannot have stacks, but an over the road truck can? Look up your local vehicle laws, if it is true it will be in there.
This is from www.pacode.com , couldn't find anything local but I am sure there is:
§ 175.75. Exhaust systems.
(a) Condition of exhaust system. All components of the exhaust system shall be in safe operating condition as described in § 175.80 (relating to inspection procedure).
(b) Exhaust system requirements. A vehicle specified under this subchapter shall be constructed, equipped, maintained and operated to prevent engine exhaust gases from penetrating and collecting in any part of the vehicle occupied by the driver or a passenger, in addition to requirements of this title for an emission control system and smoke control for a diesel-powered vehicle.
(1) A vehicle specified under this subchapter shall be equipped with a muffler or other effective noise-suppressing system in good working order and in constant operation. A muffler or exhaust system may not be equipped with a cutout, bypass or similar device and a muffler may not show evidence of external repair.
(2) The exhaust system of a vehicle may not be modified in a manner which will amplify or increase noise emitted by the motor of a vehicle above the maximum level permitted by Chapter 157 (relating to established sound levels).
(3) Headers and side exhaust are permitted if the vehicle meets the requirements of this section.
(4) An exposed exhaust system shall be equipped with an adequate heat shield or protective system.
(5) An exhaust system shall extend and discharge completely to the outside edge of the vehicle body, including a truck bed, or as originally designed.
(6) A firefighting vehicle is exempt from regulations concerning exhaust systems, mufflers and noise control.

I used to be an inspection mechanic when I used to live in PA. As I can recall, I can't remember anything that states the the stacks themselves are illegal.
For emission purposes, if you think that you may get pulled over because of them, then I would install the necessary equipment. Or at least hollow everyting out and make it "look" like everything is in place!
But, there are some real, real general statements within the inspection laws that really are grey areas. That is where thery are subject to opinion. But in general, you couldn't have part of your car, exhaust included, that would harm someone. Maybe by sticking out too far, or sheetmetal that has been torn from the vehicle and is out in the open for someone to get injured.
But yes, I agree you can get pulle dover just for the heck of it. I have even received a ticket for having a 4" pizza box scoop on my Camaro, in PA. I asked why, because it is against state inspection laws. BS. But I had to go to court to prove it, and I won.
got a ticket one time in a big rig because the stack was too short. I'm in CA though. Don't remember the details but it was something like the exhaust couldn't exit between 3' and 9' from the ground. Not sure of the #s but thats about how it read. We just put an extension on it and it was fine.
See stacks somewhat frequently here in Dallas, must not be a big deal. I used to live in your neck of the woods up in Horsham Pa. Worked at NAS WillowGrove.

The deal with Ca is you cant have a side exit exhaust between 2 ft and 12 ft, I think. I didn't look up the hieght but that's the deal.
