stock exhaust straight answer

Ok guys I done a search and it was quite overwhelming. Heres where i'm at, I stopped by a muffler shop and was quoted a price of $425 installed for a imco, I think thats right 4" exhaust kit installed. Heres my question. I measured my tailpipe and it shows 3.5" so I would assume thats stock right? Is an extra 1/2 " gonna make that big of a diff? I just installed the smfw and I believe everything is stock, it's a 95 2wd. Will I be wasting $400 with this upgrade or is there a cheaper way out? This is a decked out horse trailer pulling rig, very classy looking not exactly tough looking, so a loud sounding beastly exhaust doesn't exactly fit the truck yet some extra mpg's and more power never hurts anything. What do you experts recommend?

So forget the imco exhaust and just go that route?

You won't gain much power with a 4" exhaust, but you will gain cooler egt's,
especially when towing heavy. If you're not having high egt's issues, now, and are happy with the way the truck sounds, you're best bet would be do swap out the down pipe (as suggested). Tymar sells one that will fit good and bolt up to your stock cat (if you still have it).

I just did the tymar diy filter today and the muff shop wants 150 for the downpipe and pipe to get rid of the muffler. I will haul some pretty heavy loads so i' thinking I may just replace the xhaust since the old one is pretty rough looking.

if you take out the muffler and put on the tymar downpipe is there a big noticable difference in sound?

I put a 3" downpipe on my truck and a Magnaflow 4 exhaust....the muffler is a straight through design. This thing has a bit of a drone now. I think its because of the 3"-4" step connection. I seen about 18lbs of boost unloaded. I added a turbo branket and it added 2lbs of boost and made it more responsive.

Not to sound stupid but what is a droan? I hear that expression a-lot and probably don't want one.

OK folks, too many references to cat delete. Forum rules prohibit reference to tampering with, removing, disabling or modifying the emissions control system (it is a violation of federal law) in any forum other than the off road forum, and there it must reference a non-licensed off road only truck. This includes cat delete and gutting the cat. Please check the posting rules, top of every forum as a sticky. This includes signatures as well.

All prohibited references deleted, I don't want to delete the thread.

Drone is a constant, monotonous, humming monotone kind of sound.

Thanks for clearing that up. Would a 4" upgrade cause this? If this was a 4x4 with a lift the louder the better but it's more of a travel/horse trailer hauler for the family so loud isn't what I want. Yet better fuel econo and power are a plus for sure. I may get a tuner down the road but for now just better response and better turbo response. The muffler shop has done several of these imco systems and said they aren't really any louder just more of a turbo whistle, or is he just trying to sell me something?

Well heres my update on the truck. I had the imco 4" installed today, did the diy yourself tymar last week and everything came together. The turbo is whistling like a jet engine, although more of a deeper grunt the truck isn't terribly loud. Heres the good part, the gearshift used to wobble pretty good in neutral and is now steady as can be. $500 well spent on upgrades and the power is extremely noticable and crisp throttle response. Glad I did it for sure!
