Tranny gettin an overhaul, Options?

Well, seems like i found a decent shop and am going to take it in within the week to have them tear into the tranny, they said for the most part its not worth it to just replace the TC probably has already done damage to the rest of the tranny. They gave me a price of $1800+tax out the door, doesnt sound TOO bad for our tranny, Now the question. A fully built tranny is out cause i have limited funds but i want to do this as right as possible and not be back in this position in a couple thousand miles.

Do i put in a better TC, From where?
Do i have them put on the Trans-Go shift kit? best place to get it?

My dads truck has the sonax valve and tricumulator springs and i like the way it shifts.

Re: Tranny gettin an overhaul, Options?

the besst TC you can find, local so if it fails you can take it back!!!, A transgo kit either HD-2 or HD-2Tugger, both have teh pump mods that you need to do, use the hole size as teh smallest for Diesel. Your internal clutches " should" be fine but there's no guarrentee on that. Richter will add a few things I 'm sure.

Re: Tranny gettin an overhaul, Options?

take it from me(recent rebuild and got screwed). order a TQ from somebody anybody(Richter69) pay for it your self and give to them to put in. gat a transgo tugger kit and have them install. my HD TQ cost me what i could have got one from somebody else and would have known what i got instead of not sure what i got. if they dont like you buying parts and having them install find somebodt else. or tell them to kiss something. Richter will chime in and help a lot. Rob

Re: Tranny gettin an overhaul, Options?

do not skimp on the converter, gotta 4r pumped full of metal right now due to a precision (the blue one) converter let go. Never again will I use anything else besides what I know and trust. Jim the Alaskan has a new presicion (purple one) in the box he's tryin' to peddle, might give him a p.m. I would also do a transgo tugger kit, steel planets, and hd 45 element sprag, you should be pretty well set with all the mentioned upgrades and not break the bank.

Re: Tranny gettin an overhaul, Options?

Thanks for the replys guys, Richter if i dont get the one from jim where would i look for a converter? suncoast? And i assume from the way you talk that "the purple one" from precision is a good TC? I dont know how many options i will have with the other stuff as i believe the deal is they swap my tranny for a rebuilt one, then the next guy who needs a tranny gets mine thats been rebuilt. Guess i need to call the shop and see what kind of choices i can have or if they know a shop that actually rebuilds them.

GET A BUILD SHEET!!!!

Ask them if it still has alluminum planets in it.

Ask them what brand of friction disks.

Ask about the sprag and the roller clutches, are they NEW?

Do they put new torrington bearings and thrust washers or use old?

Make them put it in writing if they say it.

One mans throw away parts are another mans useable parts

Man there is NO WAY IN H$LL I would buy a tranny from anyone anymore,, I just do it myself.

TUGGER is GOOD,,,,, start SMALL on the holes,,, this can be altered anytime very easy but making a big hole smaller is a problem.

Check some of my older and now archived posts for my recent E4OD project and the $1200 in parts,,,, remember what I said above about parts.

Sounds like you just bought someone elses problems.

There is NO ONE in this area that can build a E4OD right. Good luck.

Re: Tranny gettin an overhaul, Options?

well good news is its my tranny that comes out gets rebuilt and goes back in. says i can get a build sheet, but mostly its going to say "tranny rebuild kit" plus a few other things. He does sub it out but says he has been using them for a long time. Also has to call them and see whether they would be able to stand by teh warrenty if i had tehm use a TC and shift kit from me. also tryed to convince me that the shift kit would SHORTEN the life of the tranny, im not sure if that is the case in some trannys. but my understanding is that this will help and lengthen the tranny life in our case, at least with the tugger, correct?

Re: Tranny gettin an overhaul, Options?

If he is "subbing" it out why pay him to be the middle man???

Find someone who can build "your" transmission for "YOU" not someone building your transmission for someone else.

My guess is if you can manage to get it out yourself you can probably build it yourself,,,,,, maybe,,,,

DOES ANYBODY LIVE NEAR THIS GUY TO HELP HIM OUT?????

Look for a shop that builds them,,,,, have all your ducks in a row and take it to them with YOUR parts and tell them how you want it built.

My opinion is that warrantees are worthless anyway,,, if they screw it up once do you really want them to take another shot?

Honestly if you can't do it yourself you are already at somebody elses mercy.

Ship it to RICHTER69 is another great answer,, freight may bite you a bit but peace of mind has a cost.

Re: Tranny gettin an overhaul, Options?

I think I would run like he%% from this guy and his shop. I paid around 2200 for mine a couple a years back and I have no idea what is in the tranny. It is supposed to have a HD TC but I cannot verify that. I think it could be better but I have to admit that it has not thrown any codes or CEL and I run in the extreme position most of the time and have been running like that for several months now. I would in no way go back to the same shop again especially after what I know now. For 1800 I think you will be in the same boat within a year. Especially if you tow or plan any type of HP upgrades. Just advice, but I really do think you need to shop around some more.

I offered, but no response.

I know all the shops in town, and the places to stay away from.

Re: Tranny gettin an overhaul, Options?

CLICK ME

Above is the link to my thread of a short time ago,,,, I just built my E4OD myself. This thread goes over a lot of it but if you click on my member name and click see all users posts you can see a few other threads on it or pertaining to it.

With parts that needed replacing and usual replacement parts and then some upgrades that were cheaper than replacing with original parts.

A Tugger kit, 1679 Hayden 30,000# stack plate cooler, Cyberdyne temp gauge,,,,,, maybe a couple things I'm forgetting I spent right at $1300 doing the work myself and got some awesome deals on my parts.

$1800 is buying you a bone stock tranny most likely with the middle man getting some grocery money.

I'll add this,,,, my bone stock Ford rebuilt tranny that I rebuilt this time ran 175,000 miles and would have ran longer if I wouldn't have let a JACKA$$ plow snow with it.

So put things into perspective,,,, I just don't let anyone do anything on my trucks anymore.

I did have my converter rebuilt by CHAMP converters here in town,,, so that one was out of my hands but I trust them. They make some converters for JASPER ENGINES,,, not sure which ones but if you do your homework you will see JASPER ENGINES makes your MONSTER BOX and MONSTER IN A BOX (just the parts for a do it your selfer)
