What to do...what to do...
Well my tranny is starting to slip at 196K so I have to make some decisions. Please keep in mind I am on an extremely tight budget and I drive the truck daily so here are some of my choices...
1) Drive it untill it quits, install junk yard E4OD and rebuild original tranny in my garage ind reinstall
2) Buy junk yard E$OD now, rebuild it in install it when finished
3) Buy junk yard 4R100 rebuild it and install it when finished
I don't have the money right now or any time in the near future to become a Bubba and I think I can handle the work myself--so what would you do? What is the most cost effective way to have a reliable tranny?
Any other ideas and all comments are greatly appreciated

If it lives long enough you could have time to source all the parts ahead of time and be ready for just a couple days down time for a rebuild and use the funds you were gonna spend on the interim unit to buy better parts. Take your time and pay attention to details it's not that bad.
Good luck.

I would think that between the yard unit and the parts to rebuild one right you would be close to a Ford remanufactured unit. Last I heard they were about $2300 with the converter and installed. They have a very good warranty for the price.

For the above post of 2300$ I spent a few hundred more and I did a full and replace of all wear parts. Full billet torque converter. And as follows
Improved lube and clutch apply oil circuits.
Increased boost and line pressure.
Fully adjustable and reprogram able valve body for each shift.
A 45% increase in total clutch plate apply areas.
Stronger drum.
A 50% increase in gear train load distribution areas which were replaced with parts made of stronger materials as well.
A 33% increase in sprag clutch holding strength.
Anti blow out snap rings.
Hi temp seals and improved design staked bushings.
The ford rebuild is just the opposite.

Only part that showed much wear internally on mine was the intermediate clutch, other than that the torque converter blew apart completely.
I went with steel planets and all the red eagle clutches with powerpacks and a full transgo tugger kit and billet converter but sourced the parts from various places I would definitely recommend just 1 or 2 now for parts. Had conversations with some of the users here by email and phone that really helped out racer_x and richter to be exact sure appreciated their help with a few key spots.

Yeah mine was about the same. But the morons who rebuild my transmission replaced the apply plate with a gasser model. But still left the clutches in for a diesel. So the gasser plate was almost a 1/2 " and the diesel plate was .325. Also having the clutches 2 vs 3 in the diesel blued and cracked the plate and destroyed the clutches to the point that the clutches were steels when I took it apart.

[/ QUOTE ]Hey dude a 4r100 is a good upgrade as it has all the upgraded internals. I got a smoking deal on one and it was pretty much plug and play .Oh I got mine of all places Ebay LOL. Long story but it was worth the wait and hasele. Add to that I got hooked up on a PI stallion from a bud and it is all good .Had to tailor shift points but it has all been worth it as the trans is the least of my worries now.
