Transmission temp gauge

97 F250 7.3L PSD. I am considering a tranny temp gauge since I tow a large fifth wheel. I have a couple of questions. First, what brand would you recommend for a basic gauge? 2. How much is the cost? 3. Where to buy one. 4. Is it something I can install myself with moderate skills? Any info appreciated.

Re: Transmission temp gauge

I bought my last Isspro Tranny gauge from Dale @ Tymar. He carries them all from cheapo to brake the bank

Re: Transmission temp gauge

The Autometer Z series is the most inexpensive gauges that I've seen. ISSPRO is coming out with a new line of gauges hopefully soon
I got mine from Tymar. $300 and change for 3 gauges, pillar pod, and install kit.

The gauges aren't hard to install. The hardest part for me was getting the pod to stay where I wanted it while I drilled for the push-pins.

Re: Transmission temp gauge

Call Tymar, get the pod and be done with it. You know you can't stop at just a trans guage, you know you want it all...go ahead...just a taste...you'll like it...your wallet won't.

Re: Transmission temp gauge

Or you can go get a job at a gauge company like I did

5. What's the best way to hook it up?

Believe it or not there are 2 different schools of thought on this. B&M reccomended putting it on the "cold" side after the cooler. I however want to know the max temp the fluid has hit or close to it, so I went off the tranny output line.

There are three schools of thought. I like to put the sensor in the test port on the side of the trans. I'm not so concerned with the maximum temp the fluid sees, I'm more interested in the average temp of the trans.

One tip I would offer is to solder all your wire connections as opposed to using butt or other connectors. My tranny gauge was quite erratic until I crawled underneath with a soldering gun. Now it is rock steady. BTW, I have an Isspro and am quite happy with it.

My tranny temp is monitored at the test port also. Same place as in the picture in the link above. Mine isn't soldered - yet. I use a Hayden 679 trans cooler (I think that number is right). I usually keep about 90 deg above ambient if I'm not towing. More or less depending on how cold/hot it is outside.
